Hello all,
Is there anyone out there that can eye ball this for me and let me know if they think its fake or legit based on what they are seeing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OMEGA-DE-VI...80b9651eb:g:mbUAAOSwT5tWP95P&autorefresh=true

It's an impulse thing and I wasn't thinking it could possibly be fake but I'm not a vintage watch expert by any means. I was thrown off by the wording on the dial and that I don't see Swiss Made at the bottom.

Thanks all.

I own some vintage Omegas, and I'll tell you that watch sold for too much considering there was no pic of the movement. Without it there is no way to tell if it's legit or not. There's no way of telling if it's a frankenwatch (all too common these days) or not. Note the listing it says "vintage original parts" in an AS IS auction --- what the hell is that? A BIG RED FLAG IS WHAT THAT IS! The dial is a repaint which also detracts from the value. Regarding the movement, no one in their right mind, if he knows what he's doing, would buy a vintage Omega without knowing (and seeing) the movement.

That sale well illustrates why I no longer buy vintage wristwatches. Too many idiots paying too much money for both good and bad which drove the prices insanely high even for crap.

Yeah thank you very much.

i have been interested in getting one of those for a while. It sounds like I should try and have a trusted expert find one for me as I wouldn't want a redial or something put together from miss matched parts.

I know the second hand on this one sweeps and doesn't tick

That just means the movement is mechanical vs quarts.

It also means it's a higher end automatic movement.
Not necessarily. Just means the mechanical movement (whether automatic or hand wind) beats more per second. The Patek Philippe calibre 240's frequency is 21,600 bph/3hz while the Chinese Sea-Gull M306S is a fast beat/high beat 28,800 bph/4 hz movement. Care to guess which is the higher end movement?

The Omega the OP linked should have an in-house movement from the 56X family with a frequency of 19,800 bph/2.75 hz. Those movements are excellent.

That's what I meant about higher end...
Even the high beat movements aren't exactly cheap to purchase. Either way too many people are getting taken by unscrupulous people frankenstiening things like this together. Always. always do the research and purchase from reputable people with proven track records....and even then I'd want to see the movement before purchase.

Oh come on, you don't think someone on the internet would fake or misrepresent an expensive watch do you?

The most important thing about buying watches on the net, or I suppose anywhere for that matter, is buying from someone you can trust. There are reputable sellers on the watch enthusiast forums, I would recommend going there and searching for sellers.

All great information. I want you all to know you all saved me on this one.

Any recommendations on a good watch forum to join? I am a minor watch enthusiast and interested in learning.

I would suggest googling a dedicated omega forum, but there are plenty of sites for general horology. watchuseek.com is a decent one.

It ain't like the Chinese Sea Gull movement is what anyone would call expensive. Trust me, in the example I used the slower beat Patek Philippe is a MUCH more expensive movement. Heck, a new Swiss made ETA 28,800 BPH movement can be had for $150.

Start at timezone.com. A shadow of its former self (regarding the quality of content) but still a lot of knowledge once you learn to sort through the BS and determine who the true WIS are. See if Bill Sohne still frequents TimeZone's Omega forum. He is one of the world's leading experts on Omega. Seriously. We used to spend much time together and I gained a whole lot of knowledge from him, but I haven't seen him but a few times since he moved from here which was 10+ years ago. Three of the vintage Omegas in my collection came from him.

Way back when Richard Paige owned TimeZone, he gave me this in some type of contest I can no longer recall. I think that was around 15-16 years ago.
