Are the 110's and 112's of better quality than today's newer knives? What's everybody's opinion on 440c vs. 440hc.

The 110 and 112 has proven itself as a bulletproof knife that last for a life time. 440c is a high carbon steel, mabye you ment 420hc, and the answer is 420 is easier to work with and take an edge. 440 was hard and it took a long time to get an edge, although it lasted a long time. Both have there benifits and drawbacks. Two totally different steels. I love them both...

I just bought a nib 1980 112 which should have 440c.

It should last you a life time...

You see some 110s that guys abused and used them as hammers. Although this beats the crap outof the knife, usually it does't kill it. Try to do that with a knife made today manufactured by any other maker. You will have a pile of parts...

I am of the I really like the old 440C camp. New, old, each will definitely get the job done, and the old ones can be picked up pretty reasonably on the auction sites if you bide your time and do your homework. Get one of each and see which floats your boat. You really can't go wrong whichever you ultimately choose though...

I honestly like them all but have grown very fond of the 2 dot I picked up last year. I found one on the bay and bid on it. When my oldest daughter fond out she asked if she could put it up for my Christmas. We sent it off to Buck and had them clean it up. I has been on my belt almost every day since.Along with this one I have a newer 2002ish(?) and a 2 stag AG. I carried the normal one for several years until I received the stag AG s30v in 2007. While the stag one is prettier there is just something about this older one that really floats my boat.

I bought a 1980 112 in eBay. I thought this year had 3 pins. This has 4 pins. Did I buy a fake or modified one?

Serpico, Welcome to the Buck forum. Are you counting the rocker pin? Also, the 2 dot 110's were a transition era model 110. The 112's Did not follow the exact pattern of the 110's. Hence, they could express some differences at a later or earlier date. It is generally accepted the 2 dot models ran thru 1979 then the 3 dot began. Four handle pins for a 110 are during the 2 dot time frame but for a 112 this could be different. I wouldn't consider it a fake or modified. It's probably genuine. DM

So, what does it have, 3 or 4 brass pins?
If it has 3 brass pins and a stainless rocker pin with a nail nick that is correct for a 3 dot 1980...???
The stainless pin is not usually considered in the count. DM

Everyone: Buck Date Code card (goofy symbols and all), please feel free to copy to cardstock (see your local stationary store for the good stuff) and hand out as you see fit, spreading the word.

Thanks. Most of my large straight knives are not stainless. The ones that are, are not 440C.
