i just wanted to brag about the vintage radio/reciever i got today. its a pioneer from 1976, with wood sides and a steel front. heres a link to what it looks like ----------------------------------> http://www.classicaudio.com/value/pio/SX450.html it was 200 bucks new, but im not sure if its worth anything now. i didnt buy it, it was my parents from their first apartment. i dont care if its not, but it works good. they dont make em like they used to. it goes nice with my technics m7 tape deck and my technics 1200s turntables. anyone else have any neat old audio equipment? all i want now for my room is one of those eighties "ghettoblasters".

I remember my great aunts radio which her family had bought in the
?1930's. Its about the size of a VDU. Real mahoghany (sp?) case, all the bands with a large central tuning dial. My dad got it after she died. Whats great though is the sound which is magnificent, the clearest sound I've ever heard from a radio, even when listening to Russian radio. Ive not listened to any digital radio yet but nothing modern beats this old set.

I have a Pioneer SA5200 Stereo power amp from the same era. Still in daily use with inputs from my Turntable, cassette deck, CD & DVD players and VCR. I though I lost it during one of the recent ice storms when the netural wire in the drop line to our house broke. Lots of stuff blew up but the amp survived with just a blown line fuse.

I get to see a lot of it on the used shelves at the stereo stores I visit to make my living. Some of it is truly cool, some of it only looks cool and some of it is just plain junk. I'm still frequently tempted to pick up th eodd piece here and there, but I really don't need anymore hifi.

Without question, if you buy the right stuff today, you get better sound than was ever possible before, even if you're talking about playing actual vinyl records. There are certainly classic pieces that have real collector value like old McIntosh tube amplifiers, but in pure performance terms we're living in the golden age of hifi. But with a sharp eye you can find some REALLY good buys on the used stuff if you know what you're looking for.

Unfortunately, performance is never cheap and a good modern hifi can cost as much as a car (whatever car you like!).

Have fun with the old stuff.

About 30 years ago I had one of those HUGE Kenwood receivers. It was the size of a small car, weighed about 500 lbs, put out 250 watts per channel, and had more knobs, buttons, and switches than a Boeing 747 jet...And I swear that you could run about 20 sets of speakers, 6 tape decks, 3 turn-tables, and the dishwasher from it.

Damn, I'd like to have one of those again...

Here is mine, I got it from my dad after he couldn't sell it in a yardsale. The only thing different that the one pictured is that mine has the wooden box around it. It is about a year older than I am. IMHO, it sounds as good as a new one and pushes my 12" Cerwin-Vega floor speakers with no problem.
