Anybody man enough (or woman enough) to shave with one? Been thinking of giving it a go...besides I just got a free pack of bandaids with my latest knife purchase. :). I saw a video the other day where a guy was shavin with a hatchet. I thought well if he can do that then maybe I will not cut myself up too bad. I got the time to learn. Any recommendations on a decent one to shop for as a first razor?

I’ve shaved primarily with a straight razor for the better part of two decades. I have a couple I use — a 5/8” Hen and Rooster and a 4/8” J.R. Torrey. I use the Hen and Rooster mostly, I’m not too hirsute. If you have a thick beard you might want to go with a 6/8”.

If I couldn’t find a suitable antique I’d go with a new Dovo. The Bismarck and La Forme with burgundy paperstone handle both look really good.

It will take a while for your face to get accustomed to shaving with a straight razor. When I first started it took a couple of weeks before I stopped tearing up during the process. Push through it and you’ll eventually be rewarded with an exceptionally smooth shave.

One more thing. Nothing wakes you up in the morning and focuses your mind better than holding a bare, razor sharp piece of steel to your own throat.
