I just purchased a "vintage Vaughn Sub Zero". I was wondering how old the Vaughn Co. is and if I actually have an old axe or not. I checked the Vaughn website and they still sell the Sub Zero and from the reviews on Amazon it is a piece of shit. Any info available would be great including imprints, stamps photos.
Thank you all
Jerry

The company started out as Vaughn and Bushnell. The Bushnell family was bought out in 1922 but the V & B label continued for a time. I have one of the newer mini hatchets. I think it is good quality although the edge needed work when I got it. I've had a couple older V&B hatchets that were excellent. They made (and still make) a lot of hammers too as well as other tools.

i've been seriously thinking about ordering a Sub-Zero from Vaughn just to see how small it is.
you guys can post and image of a GB or Wetterlings with a Sub-Zero side by side?

thanks,
buzz

Assuming you mean the Sportsman's Axe or the ½ lbs hatchet. I don't own any boutique axes but here is a picture with a head from one next to a lip balm tube for size reference.

Sub Zero I believe was (is?) a line of axes ranging in size from Vaughan I believe.

I have no idea how old it is but its old enough. Looks like a very nice axe in good shape and I bet it has very good steel. Thanks for the pics.
