Im new to collecting and like pocket knifes and fixed blade knifes. My question is what differentiates a
Vintage vs an antique. Thanks in advance for responses.

Calf

Vintage would imply a recent manufacture, perhaps no longer in production, with a manufacturer that may or may not be still in business.

Antique would imply considerably older manufacture, not produced for quite some time and a manufacturer that probably hasn't been around for a long time.

It's kind of a gray area, words mean different things to different people.

to me
Vintage: has an older style or look, not specifically old itself
Antique: the piece has age

Vintage to me means that the piece was produced within the last 1/2-to-3/4 century. The man or woman that assembled/made it is probably still out there someplace. Antique means that worker is almost certainly passed on.

Not a rule or absolute definition, but a good guideline. Context is everything.

I may be wrong but I always thought the rule of thumb was that antique = at least 100 years old.
