Looking on blade hq I see they carry the viper sharp v3 with diamond stones. Been debating on a kme or edge pro, was leaning kme because of the clamp. Now after seeing the viper sharp I’m torn. At $325 it comes with diamond and ceramic stones. Don’t care about the ceramics but at that price is it really better than a kme with the extra $125 lapping film kit that puts it at just above the $300 mark total. Also kme has more attachments but heard build quality wasn’t as good.

I own a Viper Sharp and I would not recommend it for the following reasons:
1- The clamp doesn’t hold properly blades with swedges or sides that are not plain flat.
2- The clamp, depending upon the blade, stands proud and gets in the way of the stone.
3- The diamond stones wear out way too fast.
4- They are nice while selling the product, not so much after the product has been sold.
I’d avoid them.

I bought a KME with diamond stones 5 years ago and love it. Used it as training aid and for reprofiling. Once a knife has even edges from reprofiling, we use Sharpmakers to bring back edges. I have added stuff from KME and others. For example the simple steels, 8CR, AUS8... were sharpened using the 25 buck 4 stone set: Coarse 80 Grit Silicon Carbide Ceramic Stone, Coarse 120 Grit Aluminum Oxide Ceramic Stone, Medium 320 Grit Aluminum Oxide Ceramic Stone and a Hard Arkansas Stone. At first I was concerned over the longevity of KME diamond stones, getting everyone to use no more then 5 pounds of pressure by letting them feel what that was, but now I realize they will last a long while. Another great attribute of KME is their costumer service, phone calls and emails always were quickly returned by Ron or Brian (No binder readers over there). We watched KME videos to learn how to clamp, use their stone compensator, etc. Never had any problems with the system. It was an expensive kit for us, about 200 bucks, but great learning tools create ah ha moments that stick in the brain.
Let me add that coming from my background, I would have considered the Viper or Hapstone systems now available from Gritomatic had they been around then. But remember, I was in training mode and wanted a clamp, and a place to park the other hand. Also, at the time EdgePro's kit did not offer diamonds for comparable pricing. You can now buy the excellent Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stones produced by Diemaker, who did a pass around here with tons of info coming from the threads.

I've had a KME for many years. There is nothing wrong with the build quality. I know two other people who have them and no issues and the only thing I've ever seen or read was the "bumps" on the clamp system wearing over time. That's a lot of use to make that happen and if you put a faint touch of oil on them it will stall that even further and perhaps make it a thing you never see. I've never had an issue with it. And even if you do, it is easily replaceable.
