If you've got the right wood for it, great. If not... it's probably not going to work very well. If you're doing it by hand, an axe, maul, or sledge/wedge will work fine. I can envision that right now stuck in a crooked, knotty piece of just about any hardwood you'd find around here.
It looks like a cool tool for straight wood. Not sure how the twisting action of the head would feel after a couple hours of work though. I used to hand split firewood commercially with my Father and when the axe took a twist, I could really feel it in my hands and wrists. I always liked the big 16# head all steel splitter. The one with a steel tube handle welded to a huge steel triangle. All you had to do was lift it and control the fall I'd love to try one of these things out though.
I agree with Bill, looks to me like it would play hell on your joints and muscles, especially your elbows. Also, it's hard to tell but that wood in the beginning looks a bit like aspen to me, you can split that with your thumb and a Swiss army knife. Would also have to try it to see if it was worth it but it looks like a step back in inventing the wheel to me.
