I plan on visiting Virginia and Washington D.C. this summer. I was wondering what, if any, advice VA residents could give me on my trip. I always like to carry a knife and I have tried to research the laws there. I've read conflicting things but the majority seem to indicate I'd be OK with a blade under 3" in most places. We plan on seeing the Smithsonian...are small knives allowed there?

There are no official blade length limits on folders in Virginia, but some localities have 3" limits. Generally knives are ok and pose no problem in VA. However, don't carry a knife in DC. Nearly all public buildings including museums have metal detectors or prohibit knives.

Thank you Rich. It's ironic I'm not free to carry a puny pocketknife in a place that symbolizes our "freedom".

Yes, I agree. I forgot to mention, single edge only in VA. Double edged knives are considered "daggers" and illegal.

Yea a double edged knife is considered a dirk, and dirk is considered a dagger, and a dagger is considered a weapon.
