I want to buy my dad a nice pocket knife for his birthday. My parents moved to VA when they retired so I was wondering what the laws were over there. I would like to get him a nice automatic or O/A.

Ecko,
As far as automatic knives go, they are legal to own, but not legal to carry. Assisted opening knives are okay. You can find more specifics on VA knife law through a google search, or if you are planning to stick around here for a while, $10 bucks will get you a basic membership and access to the search feature.

Actually search feature has now been opened to all members, unless it starts causing problems again

Thanks for the info Praxis.

Also I did search Yahoo and this site but, I didn't find anything about A/O laws.

Thanks again.

lazerboy2000, just saw Spark's post about search being reopened. Good news!

Ecko, to the best of my knowledge, Virginia doesn't have any specific laws regarding A/O knives. Technically, they don't meet the legal definition of a switchblade. On the other hand, LEOs may not see the difference.

I carry my A/O Leek regularly FWIW and I'm not worried about any legal issues.
