Guys, my virus software failed me and I got whacked with the latest, greatest virus.

The header is "Hi" and the body of the message reads:

How are you ?
When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you
I am in a harry, I promise you will love it!

It appears to have hit everyone in my "Sent" file this afternoon.

If you get/got a message from me or anyone like this delete it immediately!!

We had to shut our e-mail system down to deal with it at work. I've been getting the message all day, but our firewall has been taking the attachment out.

I got nailed as well John. I'll be down trying to clean the machine.

I deleted the gone.scr and the registry entries.

Seems OK now...

Hope you're machine's not too screwed!
I didn't get any emails from you today John, so apparently it's not sending to everyone in your "sent" folder.

Tell me please, is it self extracting? Did it execute when you opened the email or when you opened the attachment?

BTW, am I the only one, or is there anyone else that thinks public execution is a reasonable penalty for virus creators?

JOHN: I didn't get it from you either. Haven't gotten it at all as yet...

KEN: No, you are not alone! Virus Creators MUST ALL DIE!!

Hey guys still cleaning the Desk Computer. My Norton hadn't been updated in a while and it snuck through.

Ken it activated upon opening of the attachment. Of all things I got it from a buddy that's a DoD subcontractor for Anti-Terrorist issues . . . and he viruses me! LOL

This actually is the first time I have gotten stung by a virus, Ive caught the few that I did recieve no problem. But this one we fairly on track with what a buddy would have sent over. Thier getting sneaky.

I was wondering if the Anti-virus folks don't make these damn thing just to drum up business.

John,

No need to be ashamed, you did not want to get the virus/worm or pass it along.

Think of it like the Flu, you do everything you can to make sure you do not get it - once you do you try not to give it to your friends. If you do they know that there was nothing more you could have done.

Regards,

Ed
A victim... :(

Thanks for the info John and as Ed said, don't feel too bad, it could happen to anyone.
;)
I still haven't seen it though, makes me wonder if I'm just not popular.
LOL

KC: Let's be unpopular together. I set up a firewall as soon as John posted this string. So far so good...John, thanks for not 'whacking' me (bad visual). :p

;)

I was cleaning up a mess that a freaky javascript created on my machine a couple weeks ago...asked one of the IT guys at work a few questions and he mentioned that with all the layoffs happening in the tech market, security experts have been warning of increased virus distribution...lots of angry programmers...with lots of free time. So, be carefull, and for the love of god, don't open any attachments if you didn't ask for them...and turn of the preview frame on you outlook (if you use that).

Ted

Thanks for the warning John i saw your post before it even hit the news here, so that was comforting :)I didnt recieve the virus from you or any other source so im going to go and sit in the unpopular corner with Ken :) I have received and email from you this morning and all seems to be fine , thanks :)

Ross,

If you are using Outlook, the only way I remember is to go to the folder you want to remove the preview frame from and choose View | Preview Pane. I remember there being a way to turn off all preview panes...but I don't remember how.

If you use Outlook Express, choose View | Layout then make sure the Preview Pane box is unchecked.

Hope that helps,

Ted
