I have been swamped with goofy emails the past couple of days. All with attached files. Some asking about products to. SO I take it some pu$$nut is using the forums to get emails. Different email addresses everytime. One was fmyers@cetlink.net I'll keep adding as the come. I tried to contact sender but it seems they get returned. Besides contacting AOL is there another way to burn this guy?

Check to see if there is an underscore _ before the email address. If so then it's probably the worm that's going around. You can send email without it being returned by removing the underscore in front of the email - although it is most likely not the person who sent it to you since the worm copies address books of those who have it and replicates itself and sends emails out in other's names.

If you run Norton anti-virus they have a quick fix from their site.

Thank you Jeff.

Yes it had an _underscore. I just send the above address an email. I will probubly get a confused answer? I never opned it (them) so It shouldn't effect my email list correct? I do have Norton I'll see what I can do.

To remove it, reboot your computer and while it is rebooting hold down the Ctrl key. A menu will come up and then choose to reboot in Safe Mode. After it boots, go to program fils and bring up Nortons. Run Nortons and it will detect and you can remove the worm from any files. You may have to do a live update with Nortons before you do this, so you will have the lastest info. More than likely you don't have it but on the safe side run Nortons.

Thank you for the help Jeff,

I went through the process & had no problems. It just seemed funny that I had 4 attempts from seperate emails. The one thing that bothered me that a subject title was knife related. Made me think they were using the forums for a source of address to send.

All should be well. Chaulk this up to a learning experience. DOn't open files from unknown senders! Oh... & knife content ( buy a knife for yourself for the holiday):)

I got hit myself and keep getting the emails. Installed Norton System Works and Personal Firewall (can be had as a package deal and get the 2002 versions) and the problem is resolved. I'm not an expert, but it seems like you must have these software packages anyway. They are out of control tremendous.

Frank,
Besides contacting AOL is there another way to burn this guy?
This guy is as much guilty as you, me or any other person. The only guilt is he is not computer super-expert who knows all in advance. This virus (nimba, badtrans or something similar?) replicates itself sending infected e-mails in each Internet connection without user's participation. Some days ago I have overlooked such occasion and the virus (badtrans) have sent the infected e-mails to all corespondents it have found in my address book. Ron (SOG) notified me and I have coped with the virus within some minutes.

So please don't try "to burn" this guy. Drop me a note if you need advice how to kill badtrans, it really takes 5 minutes only.

Hi Serg,

I'm not out to burn anyone now that I have learned its not really the adressee's fault. I think I'll take the address off the above post so he won't be shunned. Good point Serg, thanks.

after 4 years of using the web , I cought one this week and it sent some out before I knew it... I am sorry if any of you got it from me- but as stated I installed norton and all is well. I am only glad it was an annoyance and not a serious one! If you do not have the anti-virus software -GET IT NOW and Back -up often....
