VIRUS ALLERT!!!

Hi everybody:

I got a virus named "hinet" and I think it came from BF.

Its a java script warm type - so it means it starts running from an email message - without openning it - just from lighting it in the preview box.

Run the latest anti virus software and stay sharp.

Can you explain what makes you think it came for BFC? Most virus's are from downlaods or email. How did you get yours? Was it attached to an email from BFC? Did you download something from BFC?

Mike, if I were in your position, I'd delete this post until you got specific details from the person that posted it. SPECIFIC details.
I'm always suspicious of Virus notices since the majority of them are hoaxes and unless the person posting here can PROVE it came from BFC, the post should be pulled so as not to start some kinda panic.

Remember "Fabreeze" killing pets?

Anyways, that's my opinion, and for once, I agree with me.

All the Best,
VG

This is the only forum I attened.

one was from a BF member - and I don't want to post his details here so I will email the moderator directly with the entire stroy.

this is for real.

I thought about that VG but I would like this person to explain what they are doing and why.

No panic will occur and keep in mind that BFC does not send attachments with our standard mailings. So if anyone has seen one I would like to know.

Now the funny thing is we have recieved viruses from members several times. The most common one is happy99.exe.

I would bet that if many of you search your computer you will find this virus as it is a very popular one.

Blilious - This should have been emailed privately to Mike or Spark rather than posting it here.
Whn it comes to viruses, the average computer user is extremely paranoid and not too knowledgeable about how one actually receives a virus. Creating a post that states that you got a virus from Blade Forums wasn't a good idea, unless you received an email directly from them with an attachement that was determined to be a virus.

Just because this is the only forum you visit is not a good enough reason to surmise that this forum is the source.

Mike, I understand your reasoning for not deleting it, since this thread has the potential to educate.

I like getting the message here. Quick can be better than precise. Forum users are likely to know enough to evaluate the warning without panic. Giving me the name of a virus allows me to check if I've got that one covered. Once the virus gets into the community it can easily come at you from a different direction than where it started. I have gotten direct email from two forum members in the last 24 hours. One came with an attachment. So I go look up hinet and make sure I've got it covered. No problem.

Hi, I got the email with the hinet label attached. I dont know much about viruses as VG says, so what does this virus do?.

I'm seeing what happened here... and it's happening all to often these days.

Folks, there needs to be a distinction between BladeForums.com and the Members of BladeForums.com

If a message comes from a member, it's not the same as coming from us, so please don't say that you caught a virus from BladeForums.com. That's like the emails saying that BladeForums.com was sending out spams when it wasn't even the right site.

Second, never, ever, ever open an attachment that you aren't 100% sure isn't a virus, and even then, be careful. I've heard so many tales of woe about people who execute some attachment that's been floating around the office.... If you have your email program set to automatically open attachments, you *will* be burned. No question.

We'll dig some more into this, but chances are this was an accidental infection, not a deliberate one.... consider it a lesson learned.

"hinet" does not show up as a virus name in Symantec's virus encyclopedia. I assume that the infected file was called hinet and that some software identified it as infected. What was the message that the scanning software gave? Did it give it a name or just a general discription of how it worked?

Where did you get the name 'hinet'? I'm a NA and there's nothing on Symantec or McAfee about it. What did it do? What anti-virus software did you use to eliminate it? I'm not flaming, but I think the right thing was to contact BF by email before creating a frenzy. I know in this day & time we are all wary of of virus problems, but I have a laptop that I've used to surf for 3 years now, and I've purposely never put any virus software to see what resulted. You know what resulted? Nada.

Email me some information & I'd be happy to research for you.

I think that I got the flu from Blade Forums!!!!!!!

I knew I should have washed my hands after touching the key board!....

I had a virus once.

Coughing, sinus-y, nausea, achy joints and cramps, just felt like hell.

Never had the type that it burns when I pee, thank God.

Knives and Cars...
Simple but EXPENSIVE.

If you got a virus or something you think might possibly be a virus in email it would be appropriate to tell the person who sent it to you.... I cannot imagine why you would go to a forum you know that person is active on and say you got a virus from that forum; that is an inexplicable action. Then correcting yourself and saying you actually got it in email from a unnamed member of that forum ... what purpose could posting that possibly serve if you'd said that in the first place? I cannot understand your motivations or what you hope to accomplish with this thread at all. I suppose discovering a possible virus could get anyone excited, and people do strange things when they're excited, in the heat of the moment....

There doesn't seem to be any known virus or hoax called hinet. Of course new viruses appear all the time, but accidental false alarms and deliberate hoaxes are far more common than genuine viruses. Depending on what protective software you're running you could get a popup message warning you of a possible threat for any javascript in an email.

It is not possible to get a virus from reading this forum or any forum. A virus is a program (including scripts and batch files as programs); you have to download and run a program before a virus in it can affect your system. It is not possible to get a virus from email without opening the message, either, though it is possible to set your mail program to open messages automatically.

This seems to be my week for urban legends -- so far this week I've encountered The Madman in the Back Seat, the Organ Thieves, a variant of the Gang Initiation Murders, and a post warning of a long list of viruses all of which were known hoaxes.... This one could be a real virus for all I know as yet, but frankly it doesn't seem likely....
