Does anybody know of a decent Virus software, other than Norton or McAfee, for the Vista operating system? My old laptop died,so I sprang for a new one with Vista on it,it came with Norton and I'm not interested in paying what they want for theirs or the other crap they try to sell you along with it.I have run V-Com's Fix It utilities, with virus software from Trend Micro along with spyware protection, for the past couple of years and really liked it.I found out that I can't put it on this operating system so I'm looking for something similar. Thanks in advance for any help.

you can try avast free home edition. i have used it for years and it works great. as far as vista running it, i dont know, i havent been to their website in a while.

My new computer [Sony] came with Norton. The Vista security however is excellent and when I Spybot nothing is found ! So Vista works well but do get a security system too.

i believe that zone alarm give you everything virus protection, and firewall protection,
for about what mcafee charges for just virus protection
think the address is zonealarm.com

XP?

In all honesty, if you put a gun to the heads of my all my family and made me go with Vista, I would have AVG on it. At least until Microsoft Defender decides it is hostile.

I never have had any problems with AVG. AVG is used on all the PCs at work, they havn't had any problems either.

The best choices on XP were Nod32 or Kapersky (pay) or AVG (free).

Norton is worse than most viruses.

You would also want ZoneAlarm, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware.

I'm reminded of some guy who was bragging how he hadn't had any hack attacks in his logs in three months. The rest of us were like, 'Uhh... we have a feeling your box was completely owned, like, three months ago.' :p

Haha, you're probably good, but really, not finding anything doesn't mean your system is secure.... especially on vista, where viruses can get more priviliged access to the system than you can!

Consumer Reports magazine recently reported that Trend Micro PC was the best anti-virus system for Vista. Downloaded the trial verson about three weeks ago and it seems to work well.

Kaspersky Internet security 7.0 works great on WinXP and Vista. My mom's old computer had Norton when it died I got her a new computer and Put Kaspersky on it. It's been working great. The hourly updates are really nice since she is on dialup plus it's been catching things I think norton wasn't. Her new computer has XP on it. My neighbor has Vista on her new laptop and Kaspersky is working great for her also.
