I need to make a stand for my new 40 lb. leg vise. I have a light-duty welder than can weld up to 3/16" thick. My thought was to weld a 4" square tube to a 2' x 4' 3/16 steel plate, and a 3/16" steel plate on top of the tube that the vise would be bolted to. The bottom plate would be large enough to stand on. Is the 3/16" going to be sufficient for this vise?

Your plan should work fine.

Suggestions:

Use 1/4" for the base plate. Your welder will be fine for welding the upright tube to it.

Weld three triangular braces about 6" on the base and 10-12" in height against the sides and back of the square column. This will make things much sturdier.

Add two wheels of the back that just clear the floor when standing upright and it can be tilted back and rolled about of the way.

Weld a 1" nut to the base plate where the foot of the leg vise will sit. ( a 1" nut is usually about just right, but check that the foot will sit inside it)
