Well, I met my first forumite in real live flesh and bones. I'm in Miami this week, and I drove up to Hollywood to visit with Blackdog. We had a really neat time. I saw (and drooled) over his knife collection, we downed a couple of beers, and he showed me The Death Star where he works (not all in that order). I was relieved that my first time meeting an "internet friend" didn't involve me getting diced up into little bits and fed to alligators

Blackdog: thanks for a great afternoon! He did rekindle an idea in my mind - to bring a variety of bowies to Nepal with me to show the kamis. I think a GH bowie would be a great fun item to have and use. Any comments or initial impressions?

It was also my first meeting with and internet friend and I too had a great afternoon. Craig is, in real life, as nice a person as anyone could ever hope to meet.

Craig was too kind to mention that our furniture is crammed into 2 rooms while we are getting our floors redone, my knives are in plastic storage bins awaiting their new display case, and we're sorting through the 23 boxes of stuff that we just got out of storage from overseas. Our place looks like a wharehouse at the moment. We plan on having a party when we get it all back together Craig. I hope you'll be there.

In our brief visit to the "Death Star" I was really happy that things were quite calm. Craig got to meet some of the Junk Yard Dogs I work with and, fortunately, saw them on their best behavior. You couldn't dress them up and take them anywhere, but at least they didn't bite anyone while we were there.

Come back anytime Craig. You're always welcome in my home.

Craig and Al,

Glade to hear that you both had such a great time. Was wondering if Blackdog was even alive or not

Guess he is surviving after all, despite all the looooonggg hours he puts in. Love the idea of a bowie-style blade. Is this going to be another design compitition? (I hope, I hope, etc.)

Craig, this GH Bowie wouldn't be the infamous GH Bird and Trout knife deep rumours in the underground are talking about, would it?

Nice to hear things went well. I always wanted to meet some of the guys I`ve come to know on the net too. The GH Bowie sounds like a great project! I was going to send something like that in for the competition but I think something was said about having khukuri style blades? HI seems to have had good luck with their "AK Bowie". Since they have the base covered with a mega thick chopper maybe GH can take a little different tack? Maybe a more khukuri -esque handle (but with a lanyard hole) and a thinner, more versitile blade(than the HI`s 1/2" thick monster). Say 10" blade with a 3/8" spine, distal taper and a nice high primary bevel (similar to a flat grind)? Oh baby!

Craig do you want some sketches of GH bowie concepts, even if they`re not "competition legal"?

Yeah, I couldn't come up with any ideas for a khukuri either, but I've got a design for a 21" Bowie ready to mail (we take our Bowies seriously here in Texas

Rick,

Yep, I'm still alive and kicking. I took the day off yesterday for Craig's visit but am writing this message from work.

Sorry I've been behind in my correspondance. Life is a bit "strange" at the moment. The recent Alaska Air tragedy has generated a bunch of new inspections on our fleet of MD-80 type aircraft. Thankfully, all of ours were inspected and no defects were found. I hope all will be back to normal in the next two weeks or so. I'm gonna be pissed if I don't get to complete my project for the design competition!!

Kozak and Berk: While I agree that the Bowie-proper isn't appropriate for the design competition, I would LOVE to have your input on a bowie a la kamis.

Marcus: I think you're right about not duplicating the super choper. What I had in mind (though Berks 21 incher sounds really neat) was a smaller bowie between the mini-jungle and the SN1. Something substantial that you could comfortably carry without too much trouble. The blade would be pure bowie, but the handle would maybe have the khukuri shape. That would preserve and maintain . . . oops, did I just outline a "khukuri-based" bowie design entry?

Craig,

How about combinding the Meterranian-stlye Bowie with the handle fashioned after the Pathan stlye Dirk. Blade length around 8", thickness around 1/4", wood or horn handle, and brass bolster. Add a "Spanish Notch" and you would end up with a light, fast knife. I've already been sketching out ideas.

Feedback anyone?
