Hi All,
New member, and I have the opportunity to visit Tokyo for several days this
coming weekend/next week. I was hoping for some suggestions for places to
visit?? Knife/straight razor making are what I'm hoping to see. Any ideas
would be great . Thanks in advance

Do you have any interest in kitchen knives? If so, Kama-Asa on Kappabashi Street (a really awesome street lined with dozens upon dozens of stores selling all sort of kitchen ware) is great. Amazing selection of local Japanese makers, as well as employees who are really knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect kitchen knife for you. They also do free engraving of the knives as well. Here is their website: http://www.kama-asa.co.jp/en/. Here's where the store is located: https://goo.gl/maps/b1nDhkMq2t52.

Another place I went to was Kanesoh in Asakusa (just south of the Sensō-ji temple area). It was a small shop that had a handful of nice looking non-kitchen knives. I bought a Higonokami there that was pretty nice. Here's their location: https://goo.gl/maps/3P7eRFQwj522

That's all I know off the top of my head.

The Edge, walking distance from Shibuya station, is a great shop. I was there in September and picked up a few discontinued Spydercos. They have a nice selection but not cheap by internet vendor standards.

There are two very nice kitchen knife shops in Kappabashi and quite a few near the fish market.

Weird thing is that if you go into the outdoor shops (Mont Bell and L Breath are my samples) its mostly SAKs and Opinels and not the Japanese made sporting knives .....

Tokyo is really Kitchen knives...the Kappabashi stores...Tsukiji Masamoto.....Kiya in Nihonbashi.
There are some shops though like ohyasuya aka The Edge in Shibuya and Munemasa in Akihabara.
But if sporting knives are your real interest take a flight/train ride to Nagoya then bus or slow train to
Seki.

Take pictures and post them here if you end up visiting any of the places suggested. Sounds like an awesome trip!

I only know that if I went there now I'd come back with a fine Higonokami or two....

If one is looking for a Higonokami (Nagao/kanekoma) in Tokyo, the Tokyu Hands department stores carry them.
They are all over but the big stores in Shibuya and Shinjuku get so many foreign tourists the store people usually speak English.

Ken, wasn't it you who I exchanged posts with several months ago where you gave me all the Higonokami advice?? I seem to recall you have some great ones...??

You might be right. My memory isn't what it used to be...lol

Many thanks all
We made it here and are on day two. And to my amazement I forgot to ask about sharpening stones . Sheesh I am getting old. If any one knows in tokyo a good place for sharpening stones I would love a suggestion. Wife and kids are already exhausted. If I make it to any suggested spots I will take some pics and post. Thanks everyone for the speedy responses. Much appreciated

So would it be less expensive to buy kitchen knives in stores in Tokyo than online or is it just for being able to handle knives before committing to purchase?
