Hey Gang, Got a buddy that is flying to Buenos Aires today (last minute thing) and he will have a few days to tour the area. He asked me about Argentina / what I recommended for him to look for.... I gave him a very brief rundown on the Beef Trade there, Gauchos and then into knives like Criollos and Navajas (and believe me that was brief)! :)

I provided the contact info for Ruben Calo and Ariel Salaverria (just in case he is even near them in B.A.)

I know Boker is made in Argentina but that is not what he is after, he is wanting something more indigenous to Argentina. He asked what specific Brands/Makes that he could buy with confidence that the knife wouldn't fall apart before he got to his destination, I couldn't help with that. Thought maybe someone here could give some advice.

Anything in a Gaucho style, Bolo, Navaja that you could recommend? Anything specific to stay away from? I will relate it to him tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

Get yourself a real FACON (you pronounce it like f**k-on :D) the gaucho's traditional knife & after that find an argentinean chica to spend your best moments there.

There are a small number of artisans who make knives. One can be found at the San Isidro plaza in front of the huge church. Take the train de Costa a fun ride. Just outside of BA. I had one knife custom made for me a few years ago for boar hunting. It took a couple of weeks. Since I usually stay about 6 to 8 weeks, 2 weeks is not a problem. It cost us about 15 peso's for the cab fare and about 3 to 5 peso (I forget exactly) for a round trip ticket. The ride goes alone the coast and goes to Tigre. Tigre is also a good day trip. note there is a very nice resturant with a beautiful terrace. It is next to the church of San Isidro

Another place is back of the church at the Plaza de Mayo. This is downtown BA. This is a weekly place for more artisans. The day is thursday.

There are also a number of people who sell knives near the Church where Eva Peron is buried. This is probably the biggest artsy/knicknack place in BA. the action is both Saturday and Sunday. I never saw a artisan knife maker but believe me my wife and daughter load up on "stuff".the church is in Recoleta.

The business card of the knife maker says the following:
Alejandro Gimenex
Cuchillos artesanales
Feria Artesanal de San Isidro
Domingos y feriados
tel 03488-443614

We love BA and it is lots of fun. Good luck.
