I am excited to announce that I will be visiting Nepal next month. I will leave
the U.S. on September 16th and return in mid-October. I will visit our shop
Kamis, their families and Pala.

I will be improving the working environment for our Kamis so we can
continue to provide top quality knives for our customers around the world.

If any of you forumites would like to send light-weight gifts to your best
Kamis, now is the time to do it. If you decide to send a gift, make sure they
are light-weight, like watches, hats, T-shirts, etc.
Thank you all

Best wishes to you on your trip Auntie, please give my regards to your father and the kamis for me! I will be sure to pray for a safe trip for you and for a fruitful visit!

Namaste'

Jack

Yangdu,

Do you know if any of the kami's need anything special? Or if there is something specific from America that they would want?

Gonna bump this for exposure. Exactly one month to get any gifts for the kamis sent to auntie.

Karda,

Inexpensive but durable watches, such as timex and the like are very much welcomed. That much i know. To a kami, having one means he is doing well. Getting one as a gift mean he is doing well and someone cares.
The same goes for western clothing. I would add sneakers, but they are probably over the weight limit.
The reason this stuff has to be lightweight and such is the fact that Auntie will probably have to take these things with her as luggage and she only has two arms and her own stuff to take also.

Karda, I live on the otherside of the world, so am unable to make a practible contribution. I hope that Auntie Yangdu meets with the Royal Kami, and that he can recognise her. So much rests in the balance, yet the world turns. Burning smoke as we speak. Namaste. Mike.

You can help in other ways, mike. A simple small monetary contibution to Auntie will help with bonuses, or she could possibly get another watch or something.
If need be i could take some payments for gifts and do some shopping for those that wish it.
The royal kami is doing better than he was, and he will recognise her. His mind is still working well, But unfortunately his arms are not working as they should and his speech has been severely impaired from the strokes he's had. I don't think he will be able to return to work anytime soon, if ever, because it all has made him a bit frail. At this point we are preferring to give him compensation and help, over letting him work and become ill again and maybe lose him altogether.
Part of the reason for this trip to nepal is to re-organise and get things working as they should be again, to rebuild the foundation for hopefully the next quarter century of business, as so much and so many depend on H.I. and it's loyal customers for their utter health and welfare.
The Dharma path is a difficult one to follow, we are still commited to walking it to the best of our ability.

Thanks Karda,

What would be the average American shirt size for an adult male in Nepal?

How about a picnic?

We could have a forum-sponsored picnic for the kamis, sarkis, other HI employees, and their families. It would be a way to show some appreciation for those of us who may wish to do something, but find it impractical to get small gifts to Yangdu. Hopefully Yangdu or Nepal-side HI management could organize it with donated funds.

We might want to hear Yangdu's thoughts on the practicality of this idea.

Hmmm... you got me on that one! The only nepalis i've ever seen were in pictures and they looked tiny. ;)
I would go middle of the road and say "medium'. Preshrunk if possible. Although i'm sure some nepali's come in larger and smaller sizes.

Rule of thumb is that an amercan medium is probably going to be a large for them.
It's kinda funny to read the old threads from when H.I. started selling logo'ed T-shirts. Many forumites ordered large and x-large thinking they would fit, only to find that they fit more like american mediums and larges.

Count me in if there is an organized donation event here at the forum.
A couple of months ago I started buying HI blades to put in the shop I manage. Customers had seen me wearing different HI blades and asked about them, so I got some to sell. So far 1 CAK and 3 AK Bowies have sold, all to regular customers that saw me wearing my Khuks and Bowie at work.
When I open my own store soon there will be a section for HI blades and other Nepalese goods. This way I can buy more blades than I could just personally and spread the love of Himalayan Imports, it's great blades, hard working kamis and wonderful owner, Auntie.

I assume that all Nepalese men are fans of 5x NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson right?!?
(Oops, I meant to say 5x [in a row] champion Jimmie Johnson! Go 48! )

Wouldn't that be great to see some pics of a kami in a 48 T-shirt making your kukri?
