Visual convex edge?

I feel like a moron but I'll ask anyway. How do you visually tell if you have a convex edge.

I've read the instructions from several sources and think that I understand the procedure but cannot recall any comments on the visual thing. The drawings would seem to indicate that there is an indicator, I think.

Sorry to be so dumb. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The way the edge reflects light is usually a good indicator, take a good look at the way light plays off the blade/edge of a few knives that you know are convex and flat ground. Once you get used to the characteristics it becomes easier to spot them. On some blades though it's really hard, due to surface finish, or maybe it's one of those "so close to flat I can't tell", thats when you bust out the straight edge.

visual is not as effective as feeling the edge.

Pinch it about 1/2 inch above the edge and drag your fingers toward the edge. If you feel a dip, it's definitely hollow ground. If it gradually slopes, it likely flat ground. If it slopes slowly...then suddenly near the edge, it's convex ground.

Now, if you're talking about a full convex edge, follow yoda's advice. The reflection will be more "dissipated"....diffused....

A flat edge - even satin finished - will seem more reflective.
