I'm mediating for someone who is trying to register but can't read the captcha's. Would an admin please be so kind to contact me to get the necessary information? I sent a mail via the contact us button, but so far no responce.

He posted his attempt here:

As some of you already know, I am visually impaired, completely blind when it comes to the sense of sight. After one year, I am still here, still shaving with straights, and loving it. I am also very grateful to the members and of the SRP site. I want to ask for some assistance regarding another forum, which I am unable to access as easily as I am able to access SRP. The reason I am unable to access this other forum, is do to their use of visual captchas in a challenge response authorization when attempting to register and even send them feedback. I am so glad SRP does not employ these frustrating methods, but if the need should arise, please allow for an audio alternative. Anyway, the site I am trying to access is www.bladeforums.com. Would any SRP member, who is also a member there be willing to please intercede on my behalf? Hopefully all that would be required is a simple note to the admin. explaining the situation, or perhaps providing my email so that I can discuss the situation with them myself, and varify that I am not some robot spam master. If you would be willing to make the initial contact with the admin., please send me a pm so that I may provide my email and the necessary explanation. Thank you in advance, Todd

This thread will probably get moved to Service and Support and maybe the site owner Kevin (aka "Spark") can help him out, but meanwhile, if he wants to e-mail me his desired user name and other registration information, I could set up his account with a temporary password and then he can go back and fill in the blanks. Initial registration is the only time when you need to pass a captcha (I never knew there was a name for these before!).

If he'd like to do that, my e-mail address is kaiserdanimal@comcast.net and I can set it up later tonight if he can e-mail me.

That seems like the best solution to me -- he can tell you or NeedleRemorse the username and email address he wants to use and you (or Needle) can register for him. The confirming email will be sent to him; then he can change his password first thing so he doesn't have to trust anybody. NeedleRemorse is a trustworthy person anyway.

I just wanted to post here and let Spark know that Todd has contacted me and said that he'd like to talk about a solution that would let other blind people access the site in the future rather than just his personal registration. He seems like a nice guy and I hope we can accommodate him.

I'm not sure what solution there is to allow the visually impaired to get past the captchas, but maybe there could be a link on the registration page that lets potential members contact a moderator who can do the sign-up for them and show them how to use the simple text thread view style (as Todd told me that his software doesn't hand pictures and code well) through e-mail. I know that leaving any "back door" without the captchas would allow spam in.

Dan, et al,
Some sites have an audio captcha although I don't know how difficult or if it's possible to set up here.

I understand Todd shaves blind with a straight razor. I want him for a member!

Spark, could you put the "report post" button on the registration page? So if a visually impaired person needs help he can click that and create a thread in the Back End so whatever moderator sees it first can help him?

Seems to me that's likely to be easier to implement than audio captcha. If the spambots start clicking that button a million times a minute of course it won't work, but maybe it could work for a while?

I guess there will be few genuine visually impaired people wanting to join Bladeforums. Maybe it could be set up so if there's more than, say, two clicks in one day it'll shut down before we get flooded.

There's an option for an audio version of the captcha anti-spam tool, but it's not available through VB at this time. The best thing for this person to do is to register with a non-VI friend, or have their non-vi friend do the initial registration for them, and the VI person can click on the resulting links.

Hello all, Todd here. First I want to say thanks for your support in getting me registered here. Captchas are a bit of a pain, but I know spam is an even bigger one. Therefore, I understand the need for them, and don't get all militant on folks who utilize them. I don't know of another good solution myself, the audio captchas are the best I've encountered thus far. Of course most captchas, visual or otherwise are under constant cracking attempts, and it's an on going cold war. For any of you who are not Security Now listeners, there's a show (#101) covering the topic, plus lots of other security and privacy stuff at http://www.grc.com/SecurityNow.htm#103. Hmmm, I wonder if instant messaging like skype or others would be an option, or are they just as open to spam? Anyways, thanks again, glad to be here and look forward to the forums.
