I was at a party, last night, and the fire was in real danger of dying out. There was some lighter knot handy, but nothing to break it apart with. Anybody familiar with lighter knot knows it has two characteristics - its like solid fuel, it's damn near petrified. I found one long leg of it, still attached to the giant stump, used the ESEE 5 to baton through it. All I had to use as a striker was a split piece of firewood (very awkward). After I got the leg split in half, both halves were still attached to the big stump. Well I chopped away at each halve until both of them were thin enough to be broken off the stump with some tactical boot persuasion. This gave us two chunks of lighter knot and that was enough to save the fire. Now this fire wasn't for survival, we wouldn't have died in the wilderness without it, but I can say the whiskey wouldn't have tasted half as good without it :-)
