Volcano wash finish

I recently tried to polish out the blade to my Kershaw Boa which is made of CPM440V the bugger didn't really get to a mirror although it got pretty shiny. Well I didn't like the way it looked for a user fo I decided to try something different. i collected a bunch of volcanic rock and put it in a plastic box and put the blade in there and I've been shaking it for about a total of 40 minutes. (yes I look like an idiot standing outside shaking a baby wipe box for 40 minutes) it's getting a pretty cool stonewash look and will probably take another 40 minutes of shaking for it to look like a pro finish. When it gets done I'll post a picture if I can get a good one.

If you like the look you ould try putting it in one of those kids stone polishers with just the pumice and the blade for a little while and see what you get for the finish and save the shaking..
Sounds like a cool finish to me.Can't wait to see the pictures..

This could be a very reasonable way to clean the forging scale off blades without the expense of a sand blaster. With the correct motor and tank I be a bowie size blade could be de scaled in no time thus saving belts from grinding it off,bet it would even work on Damascus billets if you had a bigger set up..
I feel a new experiment coming on here.COOL idea..
Thanks,
Bruce

My wife told me to get one of those rock polishers too but i'ts really not worth it for me. I don't make knives or I just wanted this one to look better i kinda just went at it like a caveman rock.....bucket.....metal......shake shake shake me want dinner now...

I definately like the look though. I saw it on a microtech once and it was called stonewash there. I think the Sebenzas come in a stonewash finish too.

oh well better go to bed now. tomorrow me have to figure out how to make fire then invent the wheel.

I got this one from our blacksmith capter newsletter.

Line the dryer with foam rubber, so that it will hold a five gallon bucket with the lid on in the center of the dryer.

Bolt four pieces of 1x2 inside the bucket to keep the medium stirred up insert work piece and grit, stick on the lid. IMPORTANT NO HEAT AIR DRY ONLY.:D

I wonder if the paint store would shake it up for you. Load it into a 5 gallon paint can and ask them. Do you have a freind that works there?

Do you start looking for a new place to live, before or after, your wife comes in and finds all this foam rubber and a bucket of rocks in the dryer.
Its to cold this time of year to move into the shop. :D

Quick thinking...member the BBQ rotisery"spell" things for the grill? They turn nice and slow.Maybe figure out a way to attach the end of a small container to it???Because they turn slower then the average rock tumbler and vibrators you could glue slats inside the container wich would bring the grit up higher and would throw the project around a bit more inside.Just a thought
