Volunteer for a day!

This post may look like its coming from kgd but it is actually your conscience speaking. You should really spend a day volunteering. You should really find the time to do this. It seems like a PITA, and we are all so busy, but just go grab a calendar, mark off a Saturday and commit yourself to volunteering for the day. It could be a soup kitchen, or maybe grab some garbage bags and clean up the the trash in the park you like to play in. Perhaps contact a scout troop and offer to show them your firestarting parlour trips. Do something productive!

Today I spent the entire day volunteering at Peche Island day. It was kind of a PITA. I started at 8:30 am and finished at 4:00 pm. All I did was drive people back in forth between the city marina and Island. The Island is a municipal park with no land access and the Citizens Environmental Alliance group hosts the Peche Island day each year. This is the same place we had our gathering at earlier in the spring. Anyhow, even though all I did was ferry a 100 or so folks back and forth across the island, the smiles on their faces really made me feel good. Most of them had never been to the island before. They were able to experience a pretty unique habitat in their own city and enjoy nature for its sake. Makes me feel pretty good to know I contributed to their experience.

Anyhow, think about that volunteer activity. Drop the whole ammo hording, zombie attack mentality for just a minute or two. Come on - quit being so selfish. Think about your community, invest in it a little bit. See your fellow mankind as humans and not sheeple. Reach out to them and share what you love about the wilderness.

You'll feel good about it. You know you will! Try it out..........

This has been a service announcement from Your conscience...The next time you have 2nd thoughts, its probably your greedy ego...Ignore that other voice!

I wanted to go to that.... I had a couple buddies going over, One guy might stick out, he would be in his mid 40's dark hair Handlebar moustache, proble wearing a loud shirt and a straw wide brimed hat,

His name is Matt, he is a puppetteer(sp), and a teacher. Extremely talented fellow, plays 3-4 instruments and is funny...

anywhooooo , I used to help out with my sons soccer team, it is a league just for autistic kids, that was alot of fun. seeing those kids smile ...

sounds like a good day,

You make a good point. I was the assistant boys scout leader when I was a younger guy. I did a lot of work with and for the church as well. It does feel good.

Uh, that's a pretty tall order! :D

Seriously, you are right and thanks for posting.

Im not a soup kitchen guy.But I pick up lots of trash, give out compliments like candy and pet dogs.

Funny.

That was a lot more polite that my conscience usually is.:)

Volunteering is a good idea, from just about any point of view.

Sounds like I had more fun than you, as I was one of the people who got to hike around on the island!:p
Even convinced Karese finally to take the big canoe back. THAT was cool, canoeing(spelling?)across the Detroit river.
Kudos to you for volunteering.

Excellent call to action, Ken.

I do a lot of pro-bono work, much of it related to legal research and investigative assistance for various under-resourced non-governmental organizations. I feel pretty good about the time I put into this, so it lets me get away with rationing my compliments and ignoring all but the cutest dogs ;) .

Here's a thought, though: If the trails in your area are maintained by an organization, club or conservancy, you may be able to volunteer your time for seasonal maintenance hikes. The Bruce Trail Association clubs, for example, conduct major Spring maintenance hikes, and similar hikes throughout the year. It can be tough work, particularly if the winter has resulted in a lot of downed trees and fallen branches - but it means a few days in the woods chopping and sawing, which is more like a vacation for W&SS types.

All the best,

- Mike

kgd, good advice. I helped instruct a hunter safety course Tuesday evening and all day Saturday. I got to build a demonstration survival shelter and spent a good bit of Saturday afternoon running around the woods and fields teaching basic compass skills. Volunteering does NOT have to be boring! :) There are many venues for volunteerism that play into the interests of guys who frequent this forum, such as search and rescue and CERT.

I do volunteer every day. I raise responsible, respectful and active children. It seems that is a rarity today.;):D

Honestly though, I have been trying to do this more through our church. A lot of people (retired/ill/unemployed) need help with household maintenance, but I really want to start a group in learning more outdoor skills.
