Just got a Vorsteed Porcupine top liner lock knife in the Destroyer Grey G10 scales with a grey coated blade. Was impossible to find one in stock, this one came up on eBay for an ok price ($10 over retail). The pic below is not mine but better quality than I could do... same knife. Impressions after handling it a bit:
-blade came very sharp but not razor sharp
-the G10 feels like... well, G10. Kind of plastic-like, not as solid feeling as good micarta or aluminum scales
-blade opening action is good, better than my Spyderco Tenacious came
-blade closing action is almost too good. Press that button and that blade is swinging down without resistance if the knife is held anything past vertical
-the scales' finger grooves are not symmetrically-cut, and that is apparently on purpose and not a defect (after having closely looked at other pics of Porcupines). One side's finger groove is cut more shallow than the other. Held in the right hand this feels good. In the left hand it feels like an odd mismatch of the scales. Don't know why they chose to do this. I don't like it.
-The more I handle this knife the more I find the wire pocket clip to be uncomfortable and not well-designed. It doesn't feel good up against the palm, and it isn't smooth getting it into a pocket/hooked over the pocket or removed from the pocket. plus the screw that holds the clip to the scale is NOT recessed, which means the very last bit of pocket insertion sometimes doesn't happen. it's a wide-head screw that literally just holds the wire clip in place by pressure. If that screw loosens ever, I would expect the clip to just slide off the scale... which hopefully would just mean your knife falls INTO your pocket but it's something to be aware of. Vosteed has better, smoother and more ergonomic clips on their other knives. Why they put this wire thing on the Porcupine is a head scratcher.
-the blade shape I love; nice sweeping curve lots of belly for a 2.99" blade, and the point is still "pointy"
-the jimping that's all over the blade and the liners is kind of meh in my opinion. it's not sharp enough on the blade's back to give much grip and on the liners it's kind of just decorative
- the handle shape is comfortable but nothing super noteworthy - kind of just rectangular. the hardware accents are a tasteful touch.
-the hole in the blade works fine for thumb flick opens; little less room in the hole than a Spyderco seems like.
-no blade movement left right up down when open
-blade came centered when closed
Overall even though I know I've nitpicked the knife, the sum of its parts is greater than its nitpicks and I do like it. I have no idea how the steel will hold up; this EDC knife for me will be used for fruit, veggies, package openings, other light tasks. Worth the $70ish price? Guess that is TBD.
