Vosteed Porcupine v. Vosteed Racoon 2.0? Which EDC is tops in your opinion? I think both are great, but I'm leaning a little bit toward my old Porcupine only ever so slightly.

Not sure about either of these being the "King of the Hill", but Vosteeds seem neat for the money. If I had to choose one of these, I'd probably go with the Racoon because it has more blade, although I'm torn because the Porcupine with its "not-a-Spyderhole" opener means the blade doesn't have a thumbstud to get caught up in material during cutting chores. That's always a plus.

I like the looks of the Porcupine better, but the Raccoon is slightly larger. Also, you refer to "your old Porcupine". Do you already have one, and are considering trying a different model?

Thanks for the reply. Those are very good points.

Also, I wanted to clarify my earlier comment, since it could have come off as dismissive or condescending. Sorry about that. I do carry expensive knives these days, but make no mistake, Vosteed makes some neat knives. I have a few Vosteeds kicking around in my collection, and I've always been impressed with the fitment and finish on them, especially for the price. Expensive doesn't always mean better. I am a really big fan of "symmetrical" designs, and a Vosteed Corgi actually sits in the little tray on my side table where my mail goes, and does envelope slashing duty. That thing is also just flat out great for fidgeting!

The next Vosteed I have my eye on, is the Vombat. That is a looker, and will make a decent EDC carry, I think. Huge bonus points to Vosteed for selling a nice selection of aftermarket scales and thumbstuds for it!!

I've got the Porcupine (I call it old but it's not really old) and a couple of Racoons.

Need pics! I love my Porcupine.

Oh, yes, I really, really like the looks of the Vombat too!! That's a really good call there! Vosteed offers a lot of knives that really appeal to me.

Racoon. But version 1. Not sure I like where they moved the thumb stud in the new model. Racoon is a workhorse and has seen more use than any of the other Vosteed I have.

never heard of 'em. Looked the knives up and they seem decent enough. Interesting to see Ray Loconico is associated with them. I have some of his fixed blades from back when he first got into the knife biz.

I wouldn't put a porcupine in my pocket. Just think of what those spikes could do to you. I have very few sub 3" knives because there are no restrictions like that in Texas. What works for me is a Spyderco Para 3 because I can choke up on it. The porcupine is a nice knife, but not for XL hands.

Good ole Texas taking care of their residents' rights!

Trying to get back on track. One thing I noticed about the Raccoon is no choke up hold is irregular at best. For those with Sasquatch sized hands it means a 3 or 3.5 finger grip. I almost bought one of these based on a Metacomplex review but went for a Para 3 LW SPY27 instead for my sub 3" travel knife and running shorts lightweight. With the typical Spyderco finger choil I can hold the para 3 like it was a Paramilitary 2.
