Knives of Alaska - Alaskan Hunter ($120)
Ka Bar - Impact Warthog ($65)
Ka Bar - D2 Combat Knife ($105)
Bark River - Highland Hunter ($90)
Buck - Alpha Hunter Drop Point ATS-34 ($75)

These are all 4 inchish fixed blades, with the exception being the Ka Bar D2 (7in.) which might be a little big. The knife will serve as a general use hunting knife for a variety of game and camp chores.

Out of those I'd go with the Bark River, they make some awesome hunting knives. If you want something smaller, check out the BRK&T Mountaineer.

I think that they are vastly superior to all the others on your list.

BTW, I have an Alpha Hunter from Buck and I don't like it very much. The sheath sucks and there are some sharp edges on the tang that make it a bit uncomfortable for prolongued use.

Ka-Bar D2 Combat Knife,a little large but great for Whitetail or Muley, butcherin' and skinnin'.Also excellent if ya' hunt bear,Black,Brown,Griz or Kodiak. Also good if your gun jams or you've unloaded and ya' need to finish the job!  :D

Cold Steel Master Hunter

Available in high carbon but I recommend the stainless Japan model for ease of maintenance.

You'll find a bunch of youngsters on these forums talking trash about CS.
But the MH is one of the most widely carried blades by serious outdoorsmen for the last 15 years.

Bark River, hands down.
In addition to the Highland Hunter, check out the Wolf River (also from Bark River). This one's going to be my next hunter/skinner.
Now, to save up for it between now and next year's deer season without buying too many other knives... :p

I wouldn't even consider this a contest!! I would go with the Bark River any day of the week. I owned a Fox-River for a short period of time and it was absolutely gorgeous. Their convex edges are awsome!! Hold a Bark River and you will see what im saying. Also look at the Fox-River!! Great knives and a great company!!!

out of the knives you mention, I would also recommend the Bark River. The Ka-Bar is a good knife for the more demanding camp chores, but is less manageable for field dressing, skinning, and food prep.

Wadda you mean??I've eaten stake many times with my Kabar "Impact hog".It skins rabbit well too. It's only 3 pieces so there is little that can go wrong with it.

I'm not saying it can't be done, however, I like something a bit smaller. I can (and have) gut and skinned deer with a 3.5" knife and feel I have much more control with them. You don't need a large knife to field dress or skin. You do need some larger knives to do the butchering, however for whitetail deer or black bear this is usually not done in the field anyway, but back at camp/home. A rabbit is a small animal and a blade of 1.5" to 2.5" is better for the job. Again, I'm not saying a larger 5.5" or 7.5" bladed knife can't do the job. I know a professional guide that uses a Buck 110 folder to gut and skin whitetail deer, black bear, and moose and he does it faster than most.

I agree, knifeman.
For gutting and skinning, I like a small blade. My Case CV trapper works just fine. :D
For butchering, a larger blade (Bark River!) is nice.

I'm planning to pick up the Wolf River (as I stated before) and see how it works out as a do-it-all blade that can also hang out in the kitchen.

Peace.

Sog Revolver Hunter edition...

I've seen and handled this knife and it looks really solid, and has a good feel. Also, the blade is pretty impressive to say the least. Having two instead of one is an awesome thing.

The Bark River Wolf River is an awesome "do it all" hunting knife. I love mine, I've been using it a lot, both on my kills and my customers (some of them don't like to do their own skinning).

It's a great knife.

Thanks for all the info. I'm really looking into the Bark River a little more thoroughly. What's funny is it's the knife I've put the least amount of study into.

Bark River rocks!
May I suggest the Gameskeeper?
I got one for Christmas from my wife and couldn't be happier.

So what are the sheaths like for Bark River? Any suggestions on where I should order the knife from?
