I'm fairly new to the whole knife scene. I recently became a fanatic after being given a smith & wesson folder as a gift... but after that a hunger for more knives developed, and I purchased a CS Magnum XII. Today I purchased a MT DA LCC Gen III, but these were some other knives I was looking at...

Folders: BM Elishewitz 690, Almar SERE 2000, BM 710, Spyd JD Smith, Boker Infinity
Fixed: BM Nimravus, SOG Government, Almar SERE Operator, Spyd Bob Lum
Big: SOG seal 2000, SOG Trident, CS Blackbear Classic

Also, I went to the Philippines recently and came back with a limited quantity of various quality handmade bolos (from Negros, Ilocos, Cebu, etc.) , so if anybody is interested email me for details... I'm working on getting my hands on a digi camera, so that I can advertise them here or on ebay. Wait for more!

Of those listed, these would be my picks:
Folder - BM 710
Fixed - BM Nimravus
Big - SOG SEAL 2000

Always go with the Spydies. They possess an excellent combination of affordability, superior ergonomics, top notch materials and just plain cool lines. ;) ;)

any other suggestions for knives in those categories are welcome also... my eyes are bulging out of their sockets from browsing 1SKS, knifecenter, and ebay!

Folder - BM710
Fixed - BM Nimravus
Big - Don't know. never used any of them. :)

I will vote based one experience, and some of the blade in question I have yet to meet and deal with.

Folder: 710 My usual EDC and certainly one of the toughest BM makes. I feel like the other BMs are a bit fragile, my 921 for instance would never be treated with the same strong arm usage as my 710. Most of the other models that come close have linerlocks and that spells weakling in my book any way you cut it (at least in BM's and Emersons...TOO THIN!!). The Axis AFK is basically the same bird with a few different design points. Also the other folders mentioned I have had little hand-time with.

Fixed: Nimravus...I like the look of the Lum but the Nimravus is moe fuctional IMO

Big: Trident....it IS the Seal 2000 with nicer handles, blade finish and guard. Same steel and bladeshape. Course if you were really talking about BIG you would have mentioned the SOG Tigershark....not its little bro SEAL 2000

The BM 690 is an exceptionally great knife.

Of all the production foldrs that I've seen, none comes close to the intangible yet undeniable feeling of pure quality that the 690 has. Maybe I just got a good one, but the finish and action on mine is essentially perfect. Everything is flush, smooth, centered, and solid.

The look and feel of this knife is quite impressive. The wood and (to my surprise) carbon fiber feels much warmer and more resonant than the standard black G-10 or Micarta. Tough to describe, but you'll know it when you hold one. You know how much better the *crack* of a wooden baseball bat sounds than the obnoxious *thwang* of an aluminum one? It's sorta like that.

Rather than looking "tactical" and aggressive, the 690 looks upscale and friendly. In months of carry I've never had so much as a raised eyebrow from even the biggest of sheeple.

It cuts very well, with a balanced and elegant blade shape. I would prefer slightly thinner stock, but the grind is high enough to make up for that.

While it likely is not as strong as the Axis locks in Benchmade's product line, it is as tough as any other quality Ti liner lock. Certainly nothing that I would describe as a "weakling". I've carried mine to work for the last two months or so and after a good deal of fairly tough use there is a bit of normal wear on the anodized liners but everything else is holding up great. If you are one of those types who like to break rocks with a pocket knife, look elsewhere. If you want something more sophistocated than your standard tactical, the 690 might be it.

From your list of folders, I would rank them as follows, personal preference only (of course), YMMV:

BM Elishewitz 690
Almar SERE 2000
BM 710
Spyd JD Smith

(way down on the list - not even close)
Boker Infinity

Geeze, I'd rather have your LCC than any of the knives you listed!

Certainly nothing that I would describe as a "weakling".

I should have prefaced my original statement with the fact that my dislike of liner locks is completely irrational. Depending on what your plans are for the knife, a linerlock can be more than adaquately strong....but you know....I hate em, that all.:p:p:p:p

Yer right about the 690 being a looker. And it is important to have a socially acceptable knife and one you can convince authorities that it is for utility and not a weapon. I cant decide if the lanyad I put on my 710 helps it be more friendly considering it has 10 tiny sliver human skulls attached.....lucky I have never had to explain it to the authorities.

No worries though...there are a few linerlocks that are seducing me back into accepting thier kind, it is only a matter of time before I shed my prejudices. I really like framelocks too.

I'd go with the Almar SERE 2000, Or the Spyderco Bob Lum(if its the tanto). I like the Bob Lum alot, its alot bigger than i thought when i got it.

Get 'em all.., too late to turn back now...lol

Larry, from the list you indicated above, I would choose:

Folder: Al Mar SERE 2000. (One of the best all around tactical folders you can get. Hold one and you'll see what I mean.)

Fixed: Al Mar SERE Operator (Same reasons as the SERE 2000.)

Big: SOG SEAL 2000 (Impressive blade, sharp too.)

A word of advise: Modern Boker folders (Gemini, Infinity, HK Tacticals):barf: :barf: There dozens of knives of far better quality (and less expensive) than any of Boker's folders. I would choose CRKT before I would choose a Boker. Too bad German made cutlery is not what it once was.

Folder (medium): Spyderco Delica
Folder (large): Spyderco Police
Folder (ex large): Cold Steel Vaquero Grande

Fixed (medium): SOG Seal 2000 / SOG Trident
Fixed (large): SOG Tigershark / Cold Steel Trailmaster

Multi-tool (medium): SOG Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier
Multi-tool (large): SOG PowerLock

My favorites:

Folder: Small Sebenza or Mayo TNT

Fixed: Scott Cook Owyhee

Large: ??? Not much experience with large blades, I like knives I can carry daily.
