Thinking about purchasing a Voyager in Large size (stonewashed). Never considered it before but now really liking it’s design and it is one of CS’s iconic models. Have 3 questions:
- anyone have issues with a sticky triad lock on their Voyager?
- is the Large size model comfortable for edc…is it easy to carry, is the weight noticeable?
- how is the handle’s ergos…when I receive my Recon 1’s I loved how the handle fits like a glove, very natural feel.
Thanks in advance

-I have one Voyager out of about 6 that does have a sticky lock. It's an XL tanto. It's not that sticky, but it isn't smooth.
-Large size is less comfortable for me than the Recon 1 to EDC because the handle is thicker. The weight isn't an issue for me, but I don't carry it in lightweight shorts.
-Ergos are pretty good, if you don't mind the handle texture. Ergos might be overall equal to the Recon 1 for extended use. The fatter handle makes it more comfortable, but the texturing takes away from that a bit IMO.

From my experience the lock problems are hit or miss and not attributable to any particular models. I carry a XL mostly so the large I carry when required is no problem. The handle ergonomics work for me. The Voyager is one of my favorite.

I've actually had much fewer problems with lock stick etc on the Voyagers than on more expensive models .

But all mine are older . Might not apply to the new ones , IDK ?

Voyagers, in general, are still one of the best values available in 4"+ folders , IMO ,:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Note that Tri-ad lock problems will almost always eventually wear-in with use . Just takes time .

the only real downside of the voyager is the pocket clip and rough cross like texture under it. requires either sanding the texture down or bending the clip to loosen it. lock wise I have had any issue with my handful of them.

grip wise it fits my hand very well. the butt end locks your hand in place and its thick enough to have a strong solid grip on it. its a solid knife and worth owning.

Have 3 voyagers...all have some lock "stickyness" of some level. If used basically two handed, (opening and closing) they are all usable and nice cutters, but have a lower quality feel because of the locks IMO. Used one handed, and they are a little more of a problem, its not a smooth and safe operation, I've cut my self twice with the XL versions closing on my fingers...user error yes, but absolutely related to the lock and overall design.

Yes, the pocket clips are bad, really no excuse on that level of tightness...again my opinion.

I like these knives, but they are 3 out of 5 stars for me, even if they are supposed to be the best, strongest lock (I don't know how true that is)...yet they still have a place in my edc rotation.

the tri-ad lock is the best in the business for consistent strength......

and yep the pocket clip is silly as is. easy fixed but should have just been designed better with flat under the clip and less tension. course if I wanted a pocket clip folder that couldn't be removed quickly or easily under speed.
couldn't be removed without shredding my pocket. couldn't be removed without pulling my pants up as high as they could go before tearing my pocket edge, it would be the voyager.

I have both the Large and XL Voyager Clip Points. The Large was slightly sticky but broke in quickly. Now I don't really notice it. The XL was great right out of the box.

If you can carry the XL legally in your state, you should check it out. It easily flips open with a one handed snap action without having to use the thumb stud whereas the Large does not. That alone makes me gravitate towards the XL. But for some, the XL is a little too big or not legal in their state. The XL is an awesome blade though. When held in the rear position of the handle, it has the reach of a Ka Bar. Pretty wild for a lightweight pocketable folder.

I have a couple of large Voyagers. For me the ergonomics are great.
As mentioned above, the clip is tight, but can be easlily bent to loosen. I d rather have a clip that is very secure and adjustable than one that is a bit too loose. A bit of sanding underneath the clip contact point is also easily done.
The handle texture is slightly rough but provides for a great grip with wet hands.
The weight of the knife is great. Very light for its size and strength. An easy edc or work carry for me.
And typical of Cold Steel , the value for the money spent is great.

Large Vaquero should be back, and I would love to see a Large Kris. Both plain and serrated.
I have one of those. It sees the most use out of all of my Cold Steel Knives and all of my other knives. I like it cuz it's not that heavy. It's a fine knife indeed. I have the Vaquero 5.5 in

Cold Steel pocket clips are Self-Wedgie Initiators (SWI).

If you have to thrust the tip into something (not necessarily stabbing a living thing), I don't think you'll find a knife with better features than the Voyager to prevent your hand from slipping while at the same time not getting in the way of normal use as a cross guard would. The geometry plus the texture are a winning combination.

Vaquero Large is my most frequent EDC, along with my Talwar 4´´. Sometimes the two together. Both superb, amazing knives.
