voyager xl

I'm not sure. I've never taken the time to properly measure it's badassness under controlled conditions. I have the clip point & Vaquero bladed versions & they fit my hand well, are well put-together, & feel very weaponlike. If you're thinking about it, buy one. They're well worth the price if the design appeals to you.

is the voyager xl as badass as it looks

Only if you like having that huge, razor sharp expanse of AUS8A at the ready. Only if you thrive on hearing that resounding thwack every time you beckon. Only if the lustful, ravenous attention of hot chicks staring at your pocket is something you require.

I think my older X2 version clip point is bad ass . My Jury still out on the smaller supposed newer version.

It looks and feels awesome, but the quality... I'm not so sure. One day of carrying mine and the blade was rusted like I've never seen before. I had even oiled the blade before hand, so I have no idea what caused such bad rusting.

I also had a friend that had bad experiences with the voyager xl; he was chopping a little bit of bamboo with it and something within the knife shot out (he never found the piece) and the lock failed and the blade cut his finger... what he was doing was not something that the voyager couldn't take, especially when it was equipped with the tri-ad lock cold steel boasts about. He sent it back to cold steel and they sent him a new knife that functions fine, but it does have rusting problems. (Note: both of our voyagers were tanto)

I don't think it's just the voyager that has rusting problems, it's probably just cold steel's aus 8. I have a different friend that also has horrible rusting problems with his spartan. Even after he cleans the rust off, usually after a couple hours of carrying it it begins to corrode again.

Clean the rust off first, then completely wash-out the knife, especially the inside of the handle.

Then wipe the blade off with alcohol or acetone before oiling it.

It might be a good idea to let it sit for a short while to let the oil "soak in" too.

The first generation of the Spartan had bead-blasted blade finishes and that is most likely why there are such serious corrosion problems there.

Hell yes! I have an old clip point and a new clip point and Vaquero. I have to laugh every time I pull one out to fondle. I have only used the new clip point to filet some fish once, but I am very glad to have these knives in my collection.

Answer is yes: Law changed July 1 here in TN so that you may carry any knife of any length, so I changed out my 4" Voyager for the 5.5". I've carried the smaller one for a year or so with lots of sweat involved, no rust, so is the XL different somehow? I'll find out pretty soon I guess.

Yeah, I'm also a bit confused about the rust. The Voyager blades look like they are stonewashed. I've carried a Recon 1 with the coating removed (the bare steel underneath is also a nice smooth stonewash) and haven't had any rust problems either.

Well, the 3" version is badass, so I bet one almost twice the size is at least twice the badass. Unless it's an exponential function; then it'd be off the charts.
BTW, I carry that med Voyager everywhere and always and I've never seen a spot of rust on it. And I work in a fab shop with no AC. In Texas....
AND it's built as solid as any knife you'll find. In fact I've been carrying (and using) it daily for over a year and there is absolutely no blade play and that lock is still just as hard to release as ever. I think that one guy whose "friend's Voyager broke" is just another Cold Steel hater.

No rust on any of my XL Voyagers. Stonewash is great. A Triad Lock failing???? I doubt this very much.

I have carried a Voyager XL for last 10 years plus. I lost my old Japan VG-1 on a job site (I suspect it was stolen) and replaced it with one of the newer models about 4 years ago. I have put these knives through more punishment (pry-bar, screwdriver, sheet metal cutter, wire cutter, chisel, throwing knife, wood chopper, etc...) and neither model has ever failed me. I have had to reprofile the the edges a few times, but have never had an issue getting them back to razor sharp and continuing with the (ab)use.

I am still very partial to the older Japanese models, but the new style has grown on me and I would have to say that I find it to be more stout than the old model. They are a great value that would compete with much higher priced knives.

So, yes. They are super badass!
