This was my first knife using Curly Koa Wood. Overall I liked it, seemed to be a good match for this design. Anyhow this is one I will have at Blade.

Thanks very much everyone. Ya I was pleased with this piece. Until I used this piece I didn't really like Koa wood but now it is groing on me. Will have to stop by the Alpha Knife Supply table at Blade and get some more!

Ive been working with koa on some other stuff and it always comes out nice. I saw one knife maker who had great knives and used koa wood which looked good but he didnt really sand it smoothe enough. The finer you sand it the nicer it will look. Depending on the color it might get real golden. Looks like a darker piece you used. Some pieces will have dark grain next to light grain which provides for a beautiful contrast. Im assuming you used some sort of wood oil?
But anywho, yeah if you sand koa down to say... 1000 grit it will look real nice.
Did you get that wood... whats that treatment where its stabilized so it cant expand? I wonder if that affects the look at all?

Also im curious how easy it is to get koa wood on the mainland? I know koa comes from hawaii but not sure if there are any other sources.
