I just got a VTAC and it is AWESOME!!! I can't wait to try my hand at throwing this thing. :D I think this forum is having a bad influence on me. I already find myself wanting a nice hammer pole hawk. :D

The VTAC is a sick thrower. You will have a blast with it, and dont worry about hurting it or breaking it.

DONT! Send it back to ATC and they can sharpen for you, I am not sure how much it costs or if its free but I know they can re-sharpen it for you. And I would trust them with sharpening it moreso than you doing it yourself.

Sharpening is not rocket science. Any reasonably competent individual can sharpen an axe. Sending it in every time it needs sharpening is a ridiculous suggestion.

You can sharpen it with any method you like. I have used a mousepad and sand paper or a diamond rod sharpener to touch up my tomahawk.

I think I trust myself enough to sharpen it.:p But I only want it as a thrower and SD hawk so I shouldn't have to sharpen it often. I was just curious to see how you guys sharpen yours.:)

Cool. Despite Rat's comment, the reason, IF I want to sharpen my VTAC, that I send it to ATC is that I want to make sure that I keep the same edge bevel that Andy has on them when they leave the shop. The sharpened edge and bevel is there for a reason. (extreme cutting) I have seen my buddy's VTAC and he thought he could sharpen it and get a very sharp edge on it and he did bt when he took it to hard cutting tasks, the edge deformed. Up to you. Good luck!

If you're just going to throw it, I doubt you'll ever have to sharpen it at all. As long as you don't engage in "extreme cutting" that is. ;)

Sounds like your buddy thinned out the edge too much, or the heat treat was bad. Most likely the former. It is a simple task to maintain a factory edge bevel. More difficult to reprofile, of course. . . if I had an expensive blade I might send it in for a proper factory reprofiling, but for simple maintenance, or even reprofiling a tomahawk it's no big deal. You would have to be an idiot to mess it up.

I've sharpened mine twice now, no problems here. In fact, it's sharper than when I got it.;)

Awesome! Thanks guys! I've sharpened lots of knives before, but I've never sharpened a tomahawk. I guess as long as it keeps sticking in the target I'm good with it.:D
