V-Tech was a line of inexpensive knives (I believe they are no longer in business). They were not what I would describe as quality knives. They were certainly not on the same level as Buck, Kershaw, Spyderco, or Benchmade.
I had a V-Tech Recon Bowie. I bought it on a lark in a knife store. I liked the overall design and the way it felt in my hand. It was cheap ($40) so I bought it just for the hell of it.
I took the knife apart and found that it had a very narrow tang. And as if that weren't bad enough, the tang had a hole in it very close to the hilt area. The hole was there for production purposes and it created a significant weakness for the blade. As a result of the narrow tang, and more specifically the hole, I determined the knife to be worthless. I eventually threw away everything except the handle, which I kept for future use.
The blade steel was described as 440, so I assume 440a. I remember the steel being rather soft, so I wouldn't expect much in the way of edge retention.
I would definitely recommend against using the knife for anything where your life might be on the line.
