Hi guys,
I can't seem to find bright red liner material thats .020 or less. I searched on here and saw someone mentioned Pop's knife supply or Sheffield knife supply. They only have .040 and its out of stock and sheffield seems to be MIA? I've checked USAknifemaker supply but they only have brick red- not bright red. Jantz and TKS don't have it.
Does any know of another source for bright red .015 - .020?

I just looked at Alpha and didn't see red vulcanized fiber. Just my opinion, but I preferer thin vulcanized fiber over G10.
I also would like to find bright red fiber in .020 or less thickness.
Years ago I bought what I thought was a lifetime supply but have used it all up.

Do you ever have the vulcanized fibre ever swell up on knife after a while?
Jim

As far as vulcanized fiber swelling up, I glued some thin fiber between two scales, soaked it in water, and ran it through the dish washer. The thin did not swell up. Now the thick fiber will swell.
This is my 41 year of making knives. I have sold thousands that have a vulcanized fiber liner. I have not had one complaint.

Drew, thanks for the information. I started to order a sheet from Professional plastics, but the shipping was $439.00 so I guess I won't be buying from them after all.

the fiber liner i used to get through jantz was .030" i have never found any thinner. i used the fiber for about 14 years, never had an issue, i also own two old loveless knives, no swelling there. i switched to .020 G10 because it looks closer to what bob used to use as far as thickness. but consider if you run an expensive pistol or wristwatch through the dishwasher and it gets ruined, does the mean it was not a quality piece to begin with ?

I used to use vulcanized fiber, but switched to single color, three layer, and five layer sheet from Texas Knife Supply. It is some sort of hard phenolic material. It is the same stuff they make nameplates and engraved signs from. For single color or three color spacers, your local trophy or engraving shop probably will sell you a sheet. It runs about $5-7 a square foot.

However, I never had a problem with fiber.
I think part of the issue with vulcanized fiber swelling is the adhesive used. I used 24 hour epoxy and never had an issue. I had a friend who had issues. He was using 5 minute epoxy. I had him try the slow cure and his problem went away. I think the slower cure resin soaks into the fiber more.

I often seal the entire handle with thin CA just before the last sanding. This fills and pores or pits in the wood ( usually burl), and seal the liners, too.

Dang just tossed some bright red away. I was never fond of it as it sometimes came out pinkish to my eye. Ya could of had it OP.. Much more fond of the brick red myself.
