It's ironic and scary that the personality type that makes people want to lead and rule also gives them inferior logic, reasoning, and analytical abilities!
Here is an example that perfectly illustrates this non- sequitur mentality:
I went to the courthouse for license plates, and before walking through the metal detector, placed my keychain, which is a large, blunt safety pin about 5 inches long, in the basket. The cop tried to confiscate it and when asked why, he said it could be used as a weapon!! Another cop also said he saw someone stabbed with one just last week. I'm not sure he was even telling the truth.
FIRST: Have you ever seen what a safety pin looks like open? OK, take that, and just make it bigger, thicker, and BLUNT. You just can't stab someone with this! The head part would prevent significant penetration, it's too thick to bend straigh, and the pointy end was as blunt as an eraser!
SECOND: ANYTHING CAN BE USED AS A WEAPON!!! Compare that safety pin to ANY of the pens freely awaiting use anywhere in the building, and the pen makes a much more efficient stabbing weapon. Also, if I suddenly decided to hurt someone, there are tons of potentially lethal objects laying around the courthouse that would facilitate my efforts anyway!
THIRD: Even if I was UNARMED, but went crazy and started biting and scratching people, any one of the cops in the building would quickly dispatch me with a Glock or mace! The people who would INTEND to use a weapon inside the courthouse for whatever reason would find a way to get one in and do their thing anyway.
I didn't mention any of these to the cop. I was polite and told him I did't realize that and would take it to my car. He was one of the good guys who take intent into account, and said of course.
I know these are all familiar points that have been beaten into the ground, but this absurdly irrational way of thinking frusturates me to the point of tearing my hair out!!
If Mr. Spock made the laws, the world would be a much more LOGICAL place.
