Though my Sharpmaker is excellent for creating razor sharp blades from blades that already have a nice utility edge, I have had no end of trouble (even with the diamond rods) of sharpening dull blades with it.

So, I decided to try the Vulkanus. Sat down with it last night and was quickly able to put nice utility edges on my dull knives that were Sharpmaker-Resistant. I have not yet achieved a true razor sharp edge with the Vulkanus, but am looking forward to combining the Vulkanus with the Sharpmaker to see if I can relatively quickly generate razor-sharp edges.

More news later,

That is interesting, it is basically a large version of the $2 pull through ceramics. What is the nature of the abrasive used?

To be honest, I am not sure. There appears to be two types of surfaces at work however. One that is in contact with the blade when the tip is pointed down as the knife is pulled through and one (for fine honeing/sharpening) when the tip is pointed up.

My fear is that the coarse "setting" removes a fair amount of metal. However, after I get a decent sharp edge, I will hopefully be able to maintain on the Sharpmaker.

I just got the Vulkanus yesterday and my wife put a new edge on all our Henkles and my my, those puppies are sharp. Now, I'm far from being an expert in these things, but this sharpener flat out works. I may eventually go the Spyderco route like so many here, but for now I'm very satisfied with the job this sharpener does. Recommended!
