My wife looked at the New VW Beetle. For; to and from school. What's the Word on this car? Thanks.

My wife and I have owned one since 02 and have a number of problems with it. Mainly electrical issues, it blows headlights about every 2 weeks, the radio shorted out, alternator charges when it feels like it. It must have a short somewhere but they haven't been able to find it, and the warranty expired over 2 years ago.
Talk her out of getting one, get a toyota.

My mom has a VW 02 Beetle. It's been pretty good to her, a Toyota though would be a stronger choice, gas mileage isn't stunning either unless you go diesel.

VW has not-so-skilled monkeys wiring their vehicles now. Mechanically, they are OK, electronics/electrics/wiring they are a nightmare.

Avoid!

Rolf:

My best bud's mom has one and it's been nothing but trouble. VW's are nice cars but they have high maintenance frequency and price per visit.

I'd go for a honda or toyota. Check out the yaris. It's a nice little car. The civic is also a nice car.

Good luck friend,
Brett

My sister had one, she traded it in when she had her first kid. She didn't have it long, but it went back to the dealership for repairs quite often! Not only mechanical problems but stuff like handles to adjust the seats breaking off and stuff like that. Cheap plastic makes up most of the interior and it's all very flimsy.

I have been very satisfied with my Mini-Cooper S, fun to drive, great gas mileage, very comfortable...and in the same price bracket. Test drive one...you might like it too.

I second the Consumer Reports. Get the annual auto issue, and check the frequency of repair records. You'll see the VW doesn't hold a candle to Hnda or Toyota. And I used to be a die hard VW man. In the 60's and 70's I drove beatles and loved them, but the new stuff is not even a pale shadow of the old VW! I'm on my second Toyota, first one went 243,000 miles before being sold to the kid down the street to go to school with, it lasted him another three semesters before dying.

My 1999 VW Passat was an exceptional car that blew away comparable Camry's and Accords as far as what you got for the money and had that solid German car road feel that the Japanese still have not been able to duplicate in their less expensive cars. Toyota and Honda are great, so if the last degree of reliability is what you are lookng for, you can't go wrong but they are stillpretty darn boring for the most part. The Beetles and Jettas are made in Pueblo, Mexico, whereas all of the other VW cars sold in the US are made in Germany as far as I know. You might want to look at the Golf/Rabbit instead if the weak doallr hasn't jacked the price up too much. As for the yaris suggestion, get that only if you are the jealous type and want your wife driving an ugly car so that she doesn't attract any attention..lol. As for the Mini, it is not as pratical as some other cars, but it is a BMW............need I say more? I have 141,000 miles on my 325i and it is still going strong.

I drive a 02 Beetle. Love it. Electronics are a problem.

Recommend, as does CR, the Rabbit.
