The previous thread on 52100 vs 0-1 was very good. I'd like to get folks opinion on W-1 steel also if possible. I have heard it is not easy to find any more; some smiths using old files as a source for W-1. W-1 differs from 1095 mainly in having somewhat less manganese, plus has trace maounts of carbide formers such as Cr Vn and Tungsten. Does it really differ from 1095 in workability or performance?

W-1 SOUNDS similar to the famous Wootz steel, which recent study has theorized was so well liked because of it's traces of tungsten, chrome, and other carbide agents. It's probably a decent blade steel, though I have no real experience with it...
