Hey y'all.

Was wondering what you'd suggest for a service member?

My nephew is currently serving in Afghanistan (xxx xxx) with the xxx xxx.

It's either going to be an RC-3MIL or a H.E.S.T. with laser engraving with his nickname and possibly his unit's emblem on it.

He's originally from xxx xxx so I'd like this to be an EDC knife when he gets back.

What say you?

Welcome
My first thought was the RC-3, it's one of my EDC's, very well balanced and tough.

I agree, If you are only going to get one RAT then it has to be the RC-3. The perfect balance of them all I think.

Both would serve him well, but if I had to pick only one it would be the RC3-MIL.:)

An RC-3 and a Leatherman Wave would be an outstanding choice for a combat medic. I wish they'd have had them years ago when I was a Corpsman.

The HEST is a great blade, I am reviewing it now, but I think the RC-3 is a better choice for active service members. Either will make an excellent EDC blade when comes home, I am just not sure about CA knife laws (they seemt o change a lot)... and what is legal.

On the flipside, as long as it is a Rat Cutlery Blade (doesn't matter which one) if he needs it, it won't ever let him down.

The consensus is overwhelmingly-steering towards the RC-3MIL.

So be it.

I appreciate the input.

Hopefully, I'll post the pics of the finished product before I ship it overseas.

Thanks everyone! :)

I can't resist putting in my 2 cents...I like the RC4 for military...a little thicker just in case...IMHO

Just remember the molle back too for the sheath. You are a good uncle!!

Hey Ive got the RC4 here at FOB Sykes Iraq and I love it, Pretty much any RC knife will do the trick out here, I am partial to my RC4 but as long as its a RAT. Tell your nephew to stay hard out there.

I'd go with the RC-3. It's a great knife that can be used in most situations you'd run into while in "Theater". Plus it would make a great EDC when he gets back home.

Another vote for the RC-3MIL. I have it in my bag pretty much every day and is a great all around knife. I do not have a H•E•S•T but I understand it is thicker, so if he is doing more prying and digging the H•E•S•T my be a little better suited for the job.

Tell your nephew thanks for his service.

Send him a RC-3 and have a H.E.S.T waiting for him when he comes home.

RAT PACK #91

Send him one of each and make him promise to pass whichever knife he doesn't choose on to another lucky soldier.

Tell your nephew I hope he stays safe, i'm deployed in Afghanistan at the moment as well, and i'm using an Izula, but like everyone else has been suggesting, RC-3MIL!
