A friend in UK came across this and bought from a car boot sale.

The blade is under 3" long.

I cannot find any reference at all in Tweedale - perhaps it was made for W Crapper and Son, or maybe even pre-dates the directory...?

Don't know if you have any ideas Jack Black Jack Black and anyone else, but any thoughts most welcome

Nice-looking old knife, it looks like an eating knife. I don't know this firm, (will check the Cutler's Company records when I have time), could have been made for a factor or hardware store. Nice find though

William Crapper was a cutler at Storrs, an outlying area of Sheffield long-ago absorbed into the city, who died in 1776. I don't have time to read through this document now, but it mentions compensation being paid to a W. Crapper of Storrs after the Sheffield flood of 1864. Your friend needs to polish up his Google-fu

Took me one search to find the two pieces of information cited above  Tell him to look online for the compensation register for the Sheffireld flood, from there he'll be able to find the name and details of the business, and what lost goods were claimed for. He should then look for Sheffield/Yorkshire trade directories, which he can also find online. He will be able to find out more information from genealogy sites, though he may have to pay a fee (as he would for this information elsewhere)
