Hello, cleaning out my Great Uncles house I came across an old meat clever stamped w.e. nicholsons greenfield mass. The clever has a wood handle and overall is in excellent shape with a very sharp edge. I started to polish the blade, the stamping looks like some of it is double stamped as if stamped by hand. Some of the stamping doesn't even show. Can anyone give me any info on the clever? Googling w.e. nicholsons greenfield mass. gives me no info.
Thanks!
Brian

100+ views and replies! Is it that rare? Lol. From my continued search seems as if this company changed names to NICHOLS BROS GREENFIELD MASS. There's one on eBay right now that looks nearly identical to mine. But I would still like some info on this old clever, it's very solidly built and heavy. Not sure when the company changed names, so I can't really tell how old this clever is. Again, any info or helpmwould be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Brian

Sorry Brian, I looked all over the place for some info and came up empty handed.

Pictures would make it.

Bernard Levine forum would get you instant good info, with pics.

Hi.

My great, great grandfather was John R. Nichols who came to America in 1848. He had worked in a cutlery factory in Sheffield, England since childhood. Two of his sons, Walter E. Nichols and John Henry Nichols started a butcher's cutlery business named Nichols Bros. in 1892 at Greenfield, Mass. Walter started a threading tool company in 1902 and put the two businesses together in 1905 as the American Tap & Die Corp.

Do you still have the knife?

Thanks for chiming in Phil. At my shop we have lots of Taps from Greenfield. The original post is from over three years ago though, also not an active user.
