Here is an order that I just finished, the 4 3/4 inch blade is made out of 2,000 layers of 1084 and 15N20 in “W” Feather Pattern Damascus. The handle is made of exhibition grade Desert Ironwood. The guard and pins are made of German Silver. The overall length is 9 7/8 inches. This is the first knife that I’ve made out of this complex pattern of damascus.

Tell me what you think.

Thanks for looking.

Kyle that looks good, I would say for your first try at it you got it. IF you run that pattern the other way, it would look like BILL Burk's Dragon breath way to go it's a winner.

Kyle,

Your progress and workmanship are a delight to see.

The feather pattern is advanced Damascus, you've forged the feather line to the tip,
those grind lines are standing straight up, your guard has nice proportions, the blade is a classic drop. Handle is better, but still, a bit thin to thick in it's flow.

I've taken the opportunity to give a bit more detailed criticism to this one, because, as you know, I see you as a serious and talented student of the art.

See you and your work at Atlanta.

John

It would look close to my river of fire pattern Dave.:D

Nice looking knife Kyle.

Precocious little brat!!!!! :D Outdtanding work on that damscus:thumbup:

Kyle,

Your feather Damascus has a few guys, with MS after their names, sweating bullets.

Your selection of handle materials is first rate.

Suggestions:

Give away your German/Nickle silver.

Buy a supply and use 416 Stainless for your fittings.

At the Blade Show, look up Jason Knight, MS Nick Wheeler, JS and Dan Farr, JS and ask each one for their thoughts and advice regarding handles in particular, and guards. This should jump start you by about 3 years.

I look forward to seeing your knives in person. Good work.

Lol! Kyle you did a great job on that damascus pattern - quite an accomplishment for you at this stage of the game. Keep up the terrific work.

These guys are anal about their 416...lol. With that said, it is kind of pricey, but it is actually easier to machine and work with than NS (no "gumminess" and less "tool chatter" on the milling machine) and you can harden if you so desire. With the exception of the Moran knife i just did, I have totally switched over to 416 and ferrous metals like 1018 and WI.

FWIW, I actually really like how nickel silver ages and the hue of the metal which isn't quite the "silver" that stainless has.

Super Clean and wonderful control
That is a statement knife Congrats Kyle
I will echo John Whites suggestions
as for the Nickel Silver...Sad but true it seems to be falling out of Favor among most collectors at least here on this message board..makes me love it more;)

I have to follow a few others here. I think that the damascus looks great. It shows a lot of control over matter (not only for a seventeen year old but for any serious knifemaker). The handle isn't my favorite part of the knife. I think that the proportions are a little bit off.

I would love to see this pattern on a well balanced SW Bowie with maybe a stag or ivory handle and blued fittings.:thumbup:

Outstanding piece regardless of your age.

Beautiful selection of ironwood and I have no problem with
the nickle silver on this piece.

Great damascus, yet still room for variations of pattern for future blades.

I do agree with Marcel in that the handle could be 3/8" shorter.

Keep up the good work as you are on the fast track to becoming a raising star.:thumbup:
