Yesterday I made a gorgeous blank of Aldo's 1084/15n20 damascus that my customer is going to be thrilled with.
Only one problem: it's not at all what I wanted- I was shooting for W pattern, and carefully followed some carelessly drawn instructions!
So, can anyone tell me, once you've made the sandwich and turned it 90 degreers, then forged out and stacked several times, the handle is in the same place on the billet that it always was....
WHICH SIDE of that billet is going to be the face of the blade, in order to get the fine W's? The side facing you (ends of the stacked pieces), the left or right side, or the top?
I'll go through this again and do more etching, but I'm shakin'- that's a lot of work to get maybe nothin'.
Thanks Folks!

It will be on the end of the bar. So you will need to open the bar up buy doing a according cutting the bar then flattening it.

You can just "ladder" what you've got and have something like this:

That's a really nice piece of steel, Karl.
What I got by forging so that the end of the billet became the face of the blade was this:

11%2B-%2B1

What I wanted was this:

(thanks to Purgatory for the lovely photo!)

This series

http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=10411

is great...except that at the critical turn the handle seems to have come loose and there's some ambiguity about which edge ends up being cut - the marks don't really make it clear since the vertical chalk mark wouldn't correspond with the bar being drawn as the arrows suggest...again, this could just be all my backwards brain getting me in trouble....AGAIN.

Any suggestions?
I'm not at all unhappy with the bar, just need to do some feathered pattern next and would like to nail it the first time!
Thanks all for your in put!

Well I don't know what your process was but looking at your billet your layer count was low and your re-stack layer count looks low as well. A real good tutorial to follow is here http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?58762-Feathered-W-s-(how-i-do-it) Just ignore the feather part at the end. If you want a finer pattern start with a higher layer count, Here is one I did,

And here is the WIP I did I started with a 208 layer initial billet

If you still need help drop me a PM I will try and walk you through it.

Sorry should have looked at the links you posted and I would have seen you already had Toby's WIP but here is another from Jerry Fisk that helped me when I was working on this pattern

And a "W" Wip from my friend Bruce Bump again ignore the splitting for the feather at the end,
