Hello all,

I have a question regarding this forum. I feel it is a valuable resource and opportunity to share knowledge.

My question lies in the organization. I am relatively new here, so pardon me if it has been addressed before. I also realize the amount of responsibility on the moderator's part and commend them!

I have noticed that there aren't any wilderness subject sticky's, (i.e, Shelter, Fire, Water, etc.) for many of the great, threads to be filed under and built upon. It is somewhat difficult to build on the knowledge if the thread gets buried in fourteen pages, and the question to be brought up again. It is almost a re-inventing of the wheel, no? Wouldn't it be more valuable to have such threads be built upon, for say, the newcomer to research what we have compiled on fatwood, without having to start the subject anew?

Again, I apologize in advance, this is in no way an affront to the structure of the forum....

Thanks!:D

It is hard to have a "subject specific sticky" as there are so many variations of each subject that seem to appear on the forum. Now one such as a fatwood sticky or at least a compilation of all of the threads into one would be cool. However if it lies up there for a while, then we are taking up sticky space. WS&S has been called out on the number of stickies we have had up in the past. We try to keep them down to a minimum so that there isn't a whole line up at the top. We tried with the google search featuer :http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=011197018607028182644:qfobr3dlcra. Then there are the people who want a sticky for everything from fishing to wound repair. If we did that, we would have a mountain of stickies before the other posts. With that being said, if you want to have general stickies on subjects that you don't think would get too cluttered up, we are all ears.

Thanks Joe!

I was thinking the same, the number of stickies would be pretty crazy...

Just hate seeing such great threads disappear!

We don't have any rules on the BTT bump yaknow :P

I bumped yours, remember :)

Hey paleojoe,

The threads don't have to disappear - I keep a 'Word' document with the URL's to all threads that are important to me.. The threads are indexed and organized by subject and alphabetical.

The following is a picture of the second page. At the top you can see the hyperlinked subjects and below a sampling of how they are set up, also with hyperlinks to the respective threads.

You can do the same with your important threads.

I actually find that I ignore the stickies, I can never be bothered to wade through that many pages and just check out the new threads !

Doc,
well done sir! A great way to catalog and index! I feel alot better knowing this is being done!

Joe,
I do remember! :p

I also think that most of us get way more than $25 worth of value from this site each year, so upgrading one's membership (with the added benefit of being able to search) is something everyone here should consider. I realize everyone's circumstances are different, but I do think its worth thinking about as an option.

Thanks Doc, never thought of that

As time goes on, and the forum history is buried in old threads, once said, never refreshed, eventually it becomes a dusty book that no one takes down from the shelf.

The value of new people asking the old questions is that we always have more answers, more ideas -- who memorizes all the old books before writing a new one anyway? No stickies means more conversation.

If you've heard it all before, then you can go read something else, and leave the people for whom it's still alive to enjoy it.

Thanks for the input gents!:D

Esav, good point. There is also the element of trial and error experience, which I'm all for.

Personally, for my own inspiration, I tend to go back and look at what came before, I feel this adds to innovation and also, in a way, pays homage and respect.

No, paleojoe, only that too much focus on longer and longer lists of old posts will cut back on our ability -- or time available -- to open up to new ideas.

cmdionne may be right. It would take some practice getting people to remember to tag a thread consistently, but that's exactly what the tags are for.

Edit: I just added one here for "stickies".

When you start a new thread, you can select a prefix. W&SS has special prefixes enabled:

Shelter
Fire Making
Survival Kit
Food
Skills
Water

On the other hand, the tags are more flexible. We can make a new topic as easily as adding an old one, just by going to the tag line at the bottom and clicking Edit.
