Chris Reeves Sebenza is often refered to as an "semi custom knife". What does that really mean? Does C.R put all the knifes together by himself or has he got a small factory with employes that does the work for him? Is there any other brands that is "semi custom"? What´s the difference between Production and Semi custom?

P.S Does anybody know how a Sebenza comes to life?

There are producton knives..... Spyderco, Kershaw ect...

Then Mid-Techs..... CR, Hinderer, Strider ect....

Then Customs...

Some are just models the Guys make with some stuff done CNC ect, while others are 100% hand made one at a time to Customers Spec.

Semi-custom often refers to a high-end folder that was customized by the makes. Hinderer (for example) will customize a 'production' knife to your specification, and so that knife will deviate from the standard model to a degree, but it wasn't custom built from scratch.

Cost, and by cost I mean how much more you'll have to pay for a "semi-custom". IMO it's most often a term used to try and make the product sound more exclusive then it really is. The Senbenza is just another production knife IMO, but hey that's just my $.02:rolleyes:

That sounds like a decent definition that I'd agree with:thumbup:

Yeah, some 'custom' makers won't entertain a deviation from their stock patterns...

at another forum one of our members volunteered to do up our 2011 Forum Knife.

given he only made 30 of them and won't make anymore to that exact design, i'd say that's a 'Semi Custom'.

Phil pretty much sums it up. But as an example think of a production model that is "dressed up", say with added bolsters or a damascus blade.

Some refer to Bark River Knives as "semi custom" They often make limited runs, do handle material and color variations, and each knife is hand ground and sharpened. So, in some way each knife is unique. BR does have a list of production models, also hand ground, but more numbers of them are made, Bravo 1 for example.

i was always under the impression that semi-custom was when you take a standard model and the maker gives you options like steel, handles etc. such as Benchmade's and Buck's custom shop.

I know this is just semantics, but I consider Bark River Knives to be semi-production knives, because they hand grind all their blades, and their handle materials are available for all their different knife patterns. That being said, they will customize a knife if you request it through one of their dealers. Again just semantics. :D
