I've been looking through my new "Knives, Points of Interests" books and I'm in love with W.W. Cronk's sub-hilt fighters. Was wondering if anyone has any information on the man....... how to contact him, etc.

Any info anyone could offer me on him or his knives would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you!

Burn,

He is listed in the knives annuals. I'll post a phone number and address for you later when I get back to my books. Someone should warn you though that you better have a small armored truck if you want one of his knives. His knives are usually in the $5000.00 and up range. Great knives though, he is truely an impressive artist.

Hi Dave,

I was looking at that one on your site last night. I e-mailed you late last night as well. Its a gorgeous knife, but not the style of his I'm in love with. I'll post pics of the style I like here tonight in this forum.

Thanks.

(figures! all the good knife makers are passed on...) ......... just kidding

Here is the style I like...

Conk.JPG

I love the finger grooves and the front and rear guards. I would love to have a knife built with this handle (no engraving of course) and with a straight blade (no recurve in it like this one has).

I'm unfamiliar with most makers that don't build autos so I don't know where to start looking or who to ask about a commission like this one. If anyone knows of a maker that builds this style please let me know, I'd love to have one made/built/ordered.

As Dave said Bill is no longer with us, but he sure left some beautiful work behind which has influenced quite a few people.

These makers have their own styles, but you may want to check into the work of makers like David Broadwell and Jim Siska.
There is another guy whose work resembles some of Cronk's (He is from the NE US), but I am drawing a blank right now.
I'll add him in when I think of him. I sure there are others, but those are who come to me at the moment.

Gus....... thanks.

Paracelsus...... that link is not working for me. Is it typed in right?

I sent a photo and all to Mike and Tom Kyle to hand to Walter and Jim is the one who gave me the specs on heat treating my 440c, don't know why I didn't think of him. I'll give him a call this week.

Sorry abut the bad link. The Broadwell subhilts at RCC are amazing. Still expensive, but a good bit more affordable than WW Cronk. Probably you best choices to get a plainer subhilt made for an affordable price in a reasonable time frame would be Schuyler Lovestrand or Jim Siska. Talk to Les Robertson for some more ideas. He has a forum here at BFC in the Exchange forums.

Hi Para,

Thanks for mentioning me!

Burn, the maker who can most closely replicated Cronk's work is Willie Rigney who now lives in Kentucky (or did last I heard). Cronk was his teacher.

Other makers to check out, are Bill Luckett, Dennis Friedly, Steve Rapp, Doug Casteel and Rod Chappel.

Cronk was way ahead of his time. Wish I could have gotten some of his work. I especially love his sub-hilt fighters. Gee, there's a surprise!

Not only was Willie a student of WWs (think they both worked in the same place long ago) but I am pretty sure Mr Rigney ended up with most of Mr Cronks drawings.

Tom,

Your right. Actually, several years ago Willie finished up several Cronk knives for an overseas customer. It took a couple years for him to finish the work.

Willie is a very gifted knife maker!
