I was bouncing around on which Spyderco to get and I decided the Caly III in CF was the best knife for me. Hope I am right!

Any tips on sharpening the ZDP steel?

Congrats. Two tips on sharpening it. Touch it up before you think it needs it, don't ever let it get dull. Use a very light touch on the stones. It seems to respond better to that than to pressure.

Great knife! Another tip, they ALL have the radial scratch on the pivot radius of the tang just in case yours has it or develops one. It't totally normal :D

I would like to add to this. I would get a leather strop and some green compound. I found it to just touch it up every once in a while to keep the ZDP razor sharp. I have yet to take my ZDP to a sharpening stone, I just use the strop/compound combo. And like Paul said, don't let it get dull, it will take you forever to try to get it sharp again.

I think you will love the Caly3 CF with ZDP....I know it's the perfect EDC for me :D:thumbup:

Great choice! My Caly 3 CF was under 10 degrees per side from the factory so it only took minutes to get it hair whittling sharp on the sharpmaker after it got dull enough to stop shaving. The thin edge really helps ease of sharpening on this one.

Great choice on the ZDP Caly, it's definately one of my favorite EDC's. +1 on getting a strop with a good compound.

One of my all time favorite knives. You will not be disappointed! Unless you hate good knives.

I've found that what the Deacon says is true. Both points. Light pressure, touch it up. I've never had mine go dull yet but when it is slightly less than insanely sharp I give it a few passes on the white sharpmaker stones.

You love it, and if you don't I'd be happy to take it off your hands. :D The perfect dress knife in my opinion. Smooth CF scales look lovely while the lamination line and low riding wire clip add just enough class.

+1 to the above tips on sharpening. Keep the pressure light, simply the weight of the knife will work fine. You should never have to use the medium brown rods with ZDP. I would suggest the UF rods, but you don't need them unless you're anal about getting the most out of the ZDP. You can use the fine whites perfectly fine, but I found that the UF rods bring it to a whole different level of sharpness.

A quick question to the OP or anyone else who knows. The title of this thread. I assume that "woot" is kinda like writing "woo-hoo!" or something like that. But does it have a more precise meaning or etymology? I mean, if one were speaking instead of typing, could one actually say, "Woot!" if excited? I realize this question is mind numbing for most of you, and it would be for me too if I weren't the one asking it, but this "woot" word has always made me scratch my head and I have to get to the bottom of it.

I'm a sys admin and you will often hear me "w00t" out loud when I accomplish something exciting. :)

I've got a CF ZDP Caly 3 on the way as well....I'm sure we'll like them:thumbup:

Good Choice!! It's an awesome knife, I've carried mine 90% of the time for EDC the last year and still love it. Like Reeek said it has to kind of "wear-in" and get the pivot area scratched up a bit, but once it's there it will be one of the smoothest knives you own.

It appears you used the wrong letters in between that l & e so I fixed it for ya :p

Thanks....and your right!!! Got mine in today, and I do LOVE it:thumbup:

Freakin awesome little blade, a true thing of beauty! It will for sure go in the rotation with my sebbies and Millies.

Talk about a scary sharp blade,,,this one has one for sure!

I'll second that. Got mine yesterday and afternoon and I think it's just what I was looking for! Don't think I could have done better for my first spyderco!
