Hey everyone, Forged out another kwaiken with a better hamon because I wasn't happy with the first one. Ill show pics on that below but this post is more to show my take on a blacksmith/shop knife.
Since I like all forged utility knives I have always been drawn to the blacksmith style knife that is just a blade with a tail that swoops around forming a handle. I had some fun forging those with little scrolls on the end. Then I saw David Lisch's shop rat and loved that even more. I thought it might be fun to make a similar style knife with maybe a longer tail that I could wrap around the handle to look more like a vine then a rat tail. In this knife the vine was 7" before i started scrolling it. I bet if I make it like 10-11" I can get some cool loops and scrolls traveling all over the handle. I also did a more hardcore etch on this vine knife and brought out some more ashi and even banding which I think was super cool. However, I feel I lost some of the frosty white color compared to the kwaiken which was a much shorter etch/polish process. let me know your thoughts boys and which hamon you think looks better.
I hope Mr. Lisch doesn't mind that I made a knife that resembles his. I don't know what the etiquette is on that yet. I'll make it look much more different in the future with a longer vine and shape.
Thanks for looking guys.
grape vine knife - blade is 3.3 inches and just under 7 inches overall. Polished and buffed the scale on the handle and vine. I think for the next one leaving the scale still black on the handle and then making the vine silver and shiny traveling up the blade might be a cool look!!
