Hey everyone, Forged out another kwaiken with a better hamon because I wasn't happy with the first one. Ill show pics on that below but this post is more to show my take on a blacksmith/shop knife.

Since I like all forged utility knives I have always been drawn to the blacksmith style knife that is just a blade with a tail that swoops around forming a handle. I had some fun forging those with little scrolls on the end. Then I saw David Lisch's shop rat and loved that even more. I thought it might be fun to make a similar style knife with maybe a longer tail that I could wrap around the handle to look more like a vine then a rat tail. In this knife the vine was 7" before i started scrolling it. I bet if I make it like 10-11" I can get some cool loops and scrolls traveling all over the handle. I also did a more hardcore etch on this vine knife and brought out some more ashi and even banding which I think was super cool. However, I feel I lost some of the frosty white color compared to the kwaiken which was a much shorter etch/polish process. let me know your thoughts boys and which hamon you think looks better.

I hope Mr. Lisch doesn't mind that I made a knife that resembles his. I don't know what the etiquette is on that yet. I'll make it look much more different in the future with a longer vine and shape.
Thanks for looking guys.

grape vine knife - blade is 3.3 inches and just under 7 inches overall. Polished and buffed the scale on the handle and vine. I think for the next one leaving the scale still black on the handle and then making the vine silver and shiny traveling up the blade might be a cool look!!

I like it. You put a real nice spin on the shop knife. The shop rat I make is something I teach in one of my one day forging classes its is a fun project. I am alway thrilled when i see one. i always tell my students that if they want to make a shop rat and call it a shop rat I am fine with that but it must have a spinkter otherwise it just a knife with a tail.

Great knives! Those hamons are very nice. :)

I've got one of Dave's rat-tailed beauties with dragons flying flying around.... :D

A spinkter?

Oh good I'm glad your cool with it :)
It really is a fun style of knife to make. I also didn't give it a sphincter so I can't use the shop rat name haha. You are the man Dave.
Thanks

Paul

Great looking knives! I like the spin you gave the shop rat, one of these days I'm gonna have to take one of Dave's classes! The smaller size of this kwaiken is really fitting for a naked blade.

Regarding which hamon I personally like better, they both look great, but I love the frostiness on the kwaiken more, however I also think that type of alloy banding looks awesome with a hamon, especially as seen in some of Don Hanson's W2  I like a variety

Thanks for sharing :)

You should definitely take that class. Nothing like learning from the creator himself.
I'll have to figure out a way to get the banding and frostiness. For some reason on this one it would no longer get frosty for some reason. Thank you
Paul
