This was one of the first axes that I restored/rehung. I found it in the back of my dad's woodshed - it was pretty rusty and pitted. Cleaned up pretty good though and it's a really nice axe head. Its a Jersey pattern, and looks very much like a Kelly Perfect. It weighs 3lbs 2oz, is 6 3/4" long with a 5 3/8" bit. Bit is very nice and thin. When I first cleaned it up, I noticed the waffle pattern on the poll and thought that maybe my dad beat on it with one of his framing hammers which pressed the indentations into the poll. But I've heard of some axe polls having a waffle pattern on them, and wondered if that might be the case for this axe. What do you think?

Also, if so, why? is there a reason for the waffle pattern?
Thanks!

Yeah I'd be interested in finding out.

Made me think of this panel beater's hammer:

It's your dad with a hammer, sorry. The only waffle polled axes I've seen are rafting axes. There's a great thread on them on this forum if you want more info.

Lots of wavy inconsistencies in the pattern and those are dimples going in which you would not have with any sort of milled face striking tool.

That is an interesting pattern. We’re the divots filled with rust? Hammer likely.

This is just me thinking out loud but he didn’t use cloth backed or acrylic duct tape on it and then leave it somewhere in the elements?

It’s a good-looking axe though

Can't identify the tool that left those marks but it was probably a square poll. Hammer tracks, AKA the union label.
