Waistpouch for hiking

I have some Mountainsmith fanny packs. They are very good, if you don't mind that, uh, "unique" feeling of so much extra mass bouncing up and down on your fanny. (Drives me nuts.)

I have a Maxpedition Jumbo Fatboy-S that I love. The S-types ride on your left side (right shoulder/left hip); the regular ones go on the right hip. I suppose you could get one of each and wear them comfortably.

Waist pouches can be limiting as far as how much you can take with you. I carry an old leather possibles/hunters bag, which is basically a shoulder bag. The Maxpedition gear is top notch and they have a good selection of pouches and packs to choose from.

I like to do this too, but there's also a minimum amount of gear that I want to put in a small pouch on my belt. This would include my flashlight, a few bandages and antibiotic ointment, a small compass, a touch up stone for my knife, a pen and notebook, etc. To this end I've ordered a Maxpedition H2 waistpack. Unfortunately, the outfit I ordered it from seems to be dropping the ball and as far as I can tell the thing hasn't even shipped yet (no notification of a backorder status either). Until I get it, I really can't say exactly how much stuff I can fit in there, and therefore what I'm going to carry in it. Once it shows up, I'll write up my impressions of it on here if people like.

My thinking behind the waistpack is that if I get separated from my possibles bag, I still have minimal gear, especially if I'm wearing my fixed blade.

I just talked to the vendor. The H2's are back-ordered for at least 2 weeks now. Bummer. :(

I use the Maxpedition Proteus and love it! I just ordered a DiamondBack Tactical Assaulters belt to use with it. The nylon belt that comes on the Proteus isn't very comfortable on the hips for a skinny guy like me.

I've been looking at the Maxpedition packs also. People I know that have them swear by them.

I have a Maxpedition Jumbo versipack. It's very well made, but I can't seem to get it to fit me comfortably. I think the problem is just me. Possibly I'd be happier if I'd gotten the S-type, which puts the bag off to my left hand side, which I've come to realize is where I most frequently want to carry a bag like that.

In any case, I continue to prefer my Duluth Pack shell bag for use as a "possibles" bag, even though there's no good way to carry water in it.

bulgron, I havn't done business with this seller, but he's located in the Monterey Bay area. He has an H1 listed along with other Maxpedition gear, so it might be worth a try. http://stores.ebay.com/Outdoor-Tactical-Sport

Thanks for the pointer. He looks like he has good prices. However, I'm expecting my existing order to filled in a couple of weeks and I can easily wait that long, so I'll just ride out the backorder.

But I'll keep this guy in mind for the next time I need gear like this.

Thanks again.

I've had the H2 for a while now and recenty got the H1. The quality is superb and they fit a wide variety of items

Just out of curiousity, why did you feel the need to get the H1 if you already have the H2? Was the H2 too small or something?

Any one owns a proteus versipack? I was looking into it. Th other brand I am looking at is the mountainsmith. By wearing these waistpouch, can I wear my duty belt with knives and torches and all? Hey, BTW, are all the maxpedition packs water repellent?

I have owned the same Mountainsmith for 13 years and is it still holding up great. You may also look at Kifaru. The guy who started Mountainsmith (Patrick Smith?) sold it and started Kifaru.
